He's just four-tenths quicker than Webber. Vettel was behind them with a brake problem and might even possibly have a gearbox change for the race.

Vettel had issues in practice and wasn't able to do as many set-up laps as everyone else. Given that he is usually three-tenths faster than Webber, he might have been right on Hamilton's tail or on pole if he didn't have car problems.

As it is... if the stewards deem that Vettel's car was under-fueled, the point is moot. He might start from the back of the grid.

Good news for Alonso... who still has five cars to overtake to claim maximum points for the weekend.

Vettel sent to back of Abu Dhabi grid

    3 November 2012

Following an investigation which spanned almost five hours, championship leader Sebastian Vettel has been sent to the back of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix grid. In a dramatic twist for the 2012 World Championship, this leaves Fernando Alonso in sixth position and with a golden opportunity to reduce the points margin.

Not dissimilar to the post-qualifying investigation that saw Lewis Hamilton demoted from pole position in Spain, the Vettel news quickly became the only hot topic in the Yas Marina paddock as an endless wait commenced shortly after the qualifying session. A decision was finally made public shortly before 11 o’clock at night.

As qualifying finished, in which Vettel finished third behind Hamilton and Mark Webber, the German parked his car underneath the Yas Hotel crossover on the exit of Turn 18. Fears of a penalty were quickly aroused when Team Principal Christian Horner confirmed that the issue was ‘fuel-related’. Under Article 6.6.2 of the Technical Regulations, the FIA states that all cars must be able to provide at least one litre of fuel for a sample.

Following a dinner break for FIA delegate Charlie Whiting, the waiting media were continuously given time estimates for when to expect news. Eventually, the stewards – including ex driver Derek Warwick, who ironically was also on the panel for the German Grand Prix, when Red Bull was almost thrown out of the race for diffuser-blowing activities – announced that ‘evidence showed the reason why the car was stopped’.

    The statement continued:

‘A report was received from the Technical Delegate that showed during post-qualifying scrutineering an insufficient quantity of fuel for sampling purposes.’

Later on, Horner argued that there had been enough fuel in the car for a sample.

“The rules say that one litre has to be provided without the removal of bodywork,” he explained. “It is our belief that the fuel is in the cell (tank), according to what (engine supplier) Renault have told us, but you’re not allowed to dismantle the cell to give a sample. The car will now be worked on overnight, so it’s out of Parc Fermé conditions.”

By the time the season draws to a close in three weeks’ time, tonight’s events could have a massive bearing. Vettel heads into the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a 13-point lead over Alonso and Red Bull has confirmed that their driver will start from the pit lane.

Alonso will lead the championship by 12 points. But I doubt Alonso will be able to get that high...

Horner won't admit they goofed and gambled on too little fuel. Too bad for them.

The championship will be closer, but... let's be honest. Even if Vettel doesn't finish this race, Alonso's chances at beating him in the championship are still very slim, considering how poor Ferrari's upgrades have been.

Hangang tenga ngiti ni Alonso nito.

Let's see how Vettel will overcome this considering he have a problematic car during P3 and qualifying.

I agree they did gambled too much on fuel, too bad for Vettel his car finally conked out after 4 brilliant stint.

All Vettel have to do tomorrow is finish 5th if Alonso gets the podium. However, I doubt he can get past Hamilton since it appears McLaren was able to sort out their soft tire problem. Now if Webber's KERS problem won't re-occur then I doubt he can get past Webber as well.

Vettel will have a tough time finishing 5th. He might come in 8th to 10th if he's lucky, but by the time he gets close to the top ten, the gap he'll have to overcome to reach the race leaders will be enormous. He can overtake most of the lesser teams, but cars like the Sauber, the Lotus Renault, the Williams and the Force India will be difficult to overtake. Amongst the top teams, the only pushovers by race end will be the Mercedes GPs, which always suck in terms of pace near the end of the race.

Let's see what type of champion Vettel is made of. But from the looks of it he will be just bonehead his way through the traffic like there's no tomorrow, and since he have a problematic car right now he might not finish the race.

Can't wait to watch the race this afternoon. The drama of this season is just amazing.
