Motorsport | Alonso revs up Ferrari ahead of Prancing Horse in Melbourne | 7DAYS Middle East
Fernando Alonso admits Ferrari have plenty of work to do if they are to start the season with a bang in Melbourne next month.
The Prancing Horse’s first pre-season test got off to a shaky start last week as they struggled to match the times set in Jerez by Red Bull, McLaren and even Lotus.
They saved their best for last, however, as Alonso clocked 1:18.877 to finish Friday’s final day of testing at the top of the timesheets and second over all – his time bettered only by Romain Grosjean’s from the third day.
But that was little comfort for the Spaniard, who is looking to bounce back from a disappointing fourth-place finish in last year’s championship.
“It is still early and there is much work still to do to understand the many changes to the car compared to last season,” the double world champion said. “We are maybe at 20 per cent of what we need to know but in the next test we will try to achieve the rest.

Is the Red Bull RB8 ‘driver cooling’ duct illegal?
When the 2012 Red Bull was launched recently, it was apparent the ‘step’ nose design differed from its rivals in the form of a sizeable inlet where the monocoque meets the new mandatory lower nose height.
Some surmised it must be for KERS cooling, or perhaps even an F-duct style channel through to the diffuser.
Amid suggestions Mercedes has come up with an F-duct style channel in its 2012 front wing, Red Bull designer Newey explained that the nose slot is in fact simply to cool the drivers.

The only thing that would make it illegal is if the drivers can affect the airflow by touching it.
I'm betting the slot will have some aero effect, but it remains to be seen what.
Newey is being coy about his car. He claims that they won't have the same advantage they did the last two years, but I wouldn't put it past him to figure out something that no one else has.
Unless Ross Brawn gets there first. Perhaps he's hiding the Mercedes till last minute to ensure that no one copies it?
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Merc AMG tawag ngayon ng Mercedes team. The above article did mention a f-duct type alteration to their front wing.
Mercedes will present its new car to the media before the start of next week’s Barcelona test session. Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg and team chiefs will assemble in the Circuit de Catalunya pit lane from 8:20am, with testing then continuing from 9am (GMT +1).
The new car has been branded F1 W03, dropping the ‘MGP’ label now that the outfit has modified its name from Mercedes GP to Mercedes AMG.
The Brackley squad began its winter testing programme in Jerez but used the 2011 car in a bid to obtain more accurate comparisons for the modified Pirelli tyres as well as further development time with the new chassis.

Maldonado sponsors invoiced $46 million by Williams for 2012 race seat
Feb.15 (PVM) It has emerged in documents leaked through the internet that Pastor Maldonado’s backers, Venzuelean government oil company PDVSA, are due to pay over $45 million to Williams for a seat in the team in 2012.
A copy of an invoice from Williams to PDVSA (Petroleos de Venezuela SA) of £29.4 million ($46.29 million) which was due to be paid on 31 October 2011. This has come to light in the aftermath of allegations, in Venezuelan political circles late last year, that the deal was illegal.

I think I heard it in the news last night that Petrov is replacing Trulli at Caterham.....(?)....
Caterham dumps Trulli for Petrov.... Heto na nga...
F1: Caterham Dumps Trulli For Petrov | Reviews | Prices | Australian specifications
Caterham on Friday finally confirmed speculation that Vitaly Petrov will replace Jarno Trulli in 2012.
It has been rumoured Petrov, the Russian driver ousted by Lotus (formerly Renault) after two seasons, was waiting on his sponsors to decide whether or not to pay out veteran Trulli's contract.
37-year-old Italian Trulli, permanently in F1 since 1997 and the 2004 Monaco grand prix winner, said mere days ago that he expected to race this season.
He tested Caterham's 2012 car at Jerez last week.
"It was not an easy decision to bring Vitaly in to replace Jarno, but it was one we made to ensure that we give fresh impetus across the whole team and with a realistic eye on the global economic market," said team boss Tony Fernandes.
The Malaysian businessman said an "agreement" was reached with Trulli to end his contract, "but he will always be part of our family".
"I understand the decision the team has made and I want to wish to the whole team the very best of luck for the season ahead," said the former Minardi, Prost, Jordan, Renault and Toyota driver.
Petrov, 27, had a seat fitting at Caterham's Hingham factory on Friday and will test the car in Barcelona next week
