Just join in the stock/amateur category and lighten the car as much as possible. Don't worry about your suspension too much since with a much lightened car, the suspension will get stiffer anyway. I joined an autocross event and came in fourth. My car was nothing special a 99 corolla 1.6L AT. I just removed as much weight as I can before the race and tried to drive as smooth through the course as possible for the best time. I only lost time on the last long straight where other more powerful cars had the advantage.
