Gordon outshines rivals in presidential policy forum



Senator Richard Gordon, Bagumbayan-Volunteers for a New Philippines Party standard-bearer, today outshined once again his rivals for the presidency as he showed his expertise on issues surrounding the country’s credibility and competitiveness, during the Carlos P. Romulo Foundation Presidential Policy Forum.

Gordon, who received the longest rounds of applause in the forum, said that the country can ably compete with the rest of the world if the government provides the people with opportunities for development and growth through the elimination of corruption and improvement of the education system.

“We have fallen behind in competitiveness because of corruption. The Filipino is a great manager of his talent, and what is important is to provide him with opportunity. To be a more competitive nation, you need education to make sure that we can provide the choices for our people,” he said.

Gordon explained that corruption must be eliminated right away, which could be done if the rule of law is strictly enforced. He said that everyone should be accountable for what they do, those who have done wrong should be punished, and criminals should not be pardoned to show the world that the Philippine Government means business.

The Bagumbayan presidential candidate added that the improvement of the country’s education system should be an utmost priority.

“Poverty is an absence of choice. We have to educate our people, we have to provide quality education for our people so that they will have choices in life, so that they will be productive,” he said.

“There must be a regime of meritocracy. When he works hard, he gets good compensation; when he is honest, he is recognized for it; when he is productive, he gets the best for it. We, therefore, need a lot of cheerleading for our people, we have to encourage them to be part of the process of making sure that the Philippines becomes number one,” Gordon stressed.

Gordon wants e-book reader for all RP students

Senator and Bagumbayan presidential bet Richard J. Gordon today said he wants the government to distribute a Kindle to all students across the country instead of spending so much on textbooks, most of which are erroneous.

Gordon made the statement at the Lyceum of the Philippines presidential forum in reaction to the latest United Nations (UN) Report that in the absence of decisive political leadership, the Philippines is in danger of missing the goal of achieving universal primary education by 2015.

“We spent so much money on books, right? Mali-mali pa. Here’s a little computer called Kindle. You can put the entire curriculum, from Grade 1 to high school to college here. Every kid should have kindle. He who reads, leads,” he said..

“Before China does it and before India does it, the Philippines should be the first ones to use electronic books in school,” he added, explaining that Kindle is an electronic device that can store up to 9,000 books and costs $250 each.

This proposal, according to the senator, is part of his programs for improving the country’s education system, which, the UN Report said, is trailing behind the African nations of Tanzania and Zambia .

“The UN said education poverty rates among the poor are four times the national average. Our Constitution mandates that education must be given priority. But in the budget, No. 1 is debt servicing, No. 2 is the IRA (Internal Revenue Allotment) for local governments, while education is only at No. 3. We should be spending 6% of GDP or P444 billion on our education,” Gordon said.

The Bagumbayan Party standard-bearer also said that aside from raising the salaries of teachers to at least P40,000, there should also be upgrading of teaching competence through continuous training to be able to address the low proficiency level of students especially on Math, Science and English.

“Every teacher should get P40,000. That’s my ideal. Not P12,000, but P40,000. Japan pays P77,000. In Singapore , they pay P122,000 a month. We must also understand that better teachers would pave the way for better and well-informed students. Continuing educational program for teachers is a must for our society today," he stressed.

Gordon has long been advocating for the upgrading of standards of the country's education system. He has a bill pending in Congress, called the Health and Education Acceleration Program (HEAP), which aims to spearhead the rehabilitation and improvement of the education and health systems.

so this is a contest on who has the best sounding ideas without considering the chances if those ideas can be turned into reality?

to win the votes of students, just promise them free tuition and daily allowance when you become president

to win the votes of the working class, just promise them you'll raise minimum wage to P2,000/day plus 1 year salary as Christmas bonus, you'll provide free healthcare, and cut income tax

to win the votes of senior citizens, just promise them you'll increase the amount of pension they receive, provide them free medicine and hospitalization, increase senior citizen discount to 80%

to win the votes of businessmen, just promise them you'll cut import tax, cut income tax, disallow unions...

That way we can all have informed choices come election time. once we have their visions/plans/goals, then we can assess individually kung sino sa tingin natin ang me sense at sino ang wala. if you think that brader ajot's candidate is just saying bs kase eh di mo nakikita na posible ang sinasabi nya, then that's your opinion. yung iba eh sigurado me kani-kaniyang opinyon din.

if you are to analyze and consider the chances if those ideas will be turned to reality, that is the time you need to check their accomplishments and experiences. i agree that visions and ideas are easier said than done so you need to also hear the other side of the tape, as their credentials and track records will never lie.

yes it is so easy for a candidate to say those things as what was mentioned; but this is his agenda/proposal/platform when he wins to become the next President of our Republic

Nothing is Impossible. If you just continuing on performing and STOP whining around the corner, then so you can achieve your plans. Every plan has its short term & long term goals - this proposal of Gordon; I do believe he has his own goals to achieve this.

Budget deficit is really our countries economic problem, its just a matter on knowing how to liquidate certain funds and on how to properly budget ang kaban ng bayan, that'll be all up to our next President, on how he can achieve his platform(s).

Gordon is a man of action, so let's leave it up to him on how he can manage things. People also thought that the province of Olongapo was such a downfall, when Mt. Pinatubo erupted, but look at Olongapo now.

If a man is a person who knows how to think and perceive things into reality, so he can achieve his goals in life.

I know that Gordon will make a difference and I know that he is a candidate that can help resolve our countries conflict. He is a person who does not talk the talk, but a person who knows how to walk the talk.
