Then what's the point of democracy again??? The PEOPLE should be leading the nation while politicians pass laws demanded by the people... .

How can progress of democracy be based on the power of the few, isn't democracy the power of the people (hence "people power")...

Supports my belief of the Phil not ready for full democracy once again as people like to be led and not take steps of their own.

The politics here are indeed led by a few families na wala ibang magawa kung mag laro ng politics. Lalo na sa probinsya, the people know which families are affiliated by province (osmena, dy, joson, cojuangco etc). Kaya yung politics dito is comparable to the feudal clans of the middle ages.

I think people are fed up with politics kaya mostly doesn't care anymore kung sinong maupo sa pwesto.

National cleansing talaga ang dapat.. from the lowest to the top..

May nabasa akong nagsabi na yung greatest cultural values natin na magaling tayong tumamanaw ng utang na loob at close ties with our families and friends ang naging pinakamalaking balakid din sa atin para magkaroon ng progreso.

    Who is Juan dela Cruz?
For the longest time, Filipinos everywhere have asked this question: Why are we in a rut? In
generation after generation there is this unshakable sense of melancholy, this sense that our
world will never get better; that we will never reach our dreams as a nation. A defeatist
attitude, a sense of hopelessness some might say that is. Yet all one needs to do is look into
our collective past, look deep into the Filipino's psyche, ask the right questions and one’s self
to know why. The glass is not half-empty, it is half-full!
All this “glass is not half-empty” mumbo jumbo is just “crap”, one might think. But is it?
Have you – the Filipino – stared into the mirror lately? Doctors routinely turning into nurses
then flying off to the land of milk and honey. GDP that has not shown any spectacular
    growth in the last several decades. Everyday we see people begging in the street corner;
hungry people. Not just ordinary people but children routinely go hungry. In our farthest
barangays, the things we in the 21st century take for granted – power and water, among others
    – are luxuries. The Internet barely penetrates, heck, computers barely penetrate our society
that far out. And school children remain locked in 19th century-ish ideas. Then we are
deluged by bad news daily, each news snippet increasingly depressing. It is indeed a hard
press to smile and smell the roses.
We have not risen to greatness and we may never do. Then again, do we want to? On most
occasions, Filipinos work really hard. We are an industrious people. We seemingly never
exhaust ourselves in the daily grind. Our people never stop toiling, and we continue to smile
as we toil; our inspiration, undoubtedly, to uplift our lives. Yet in many instances it is not for
ourselves but the endless string of Extended Family members that must be supported. It may
be a brother supporting a younger sister or vice versa. It may be children supporting parents.
It may be one or a combination of countless scenarios. Endlessly, generations work for the
    succeeding generations.
When one looks beyond our immediate community and out at the grand scale of things, one
does not find this sense of Family. There is no Filipino Family. It simply doesn't scale up.
    ii

How else do we explain the squandering of resources, the divisiveness, the untrustworthiness.
Have the stewards of this nation simply chosen to enslave, to work for themselves, to enrich
their own and blindly and like parasites feed on this race? It is very much tempting to say so,
to shout in a loud voice and point fingers but the fact of the matter is this: it isn't entirely their
    fault either.
And that is what this whole thing is all about. It isn't any one person, or group of people or
this or that leader that has brought this Republic – this race – to this point; this rut. The
moment, we choose to set aside the blame, to dig deep within our own Filipino psyche, to
take our own destiny into our hands; that will be the moment we as a people step up and make
good on the myriad of promise exhibited by generations past. Still to get there, one needs a
greater understanding of who the Filipino is.

that's the very problem of it.it looks like that we have it the other way around.these stupid politicians truly lead us to poverty while they enrich their pockets and friends thru our tax.

people like myself, voted for them hoping they will lead us to something worthwhile and not to 'rob' us.that's why i truly believe that in order for this poor country to become one of the tigers of asia, instead of using their (nincompoop politikos)'talent' robbing the people, they should focus or be patriotic enough to make that hope come true. How?? well they know better, aaahhh, like be contented to what they have already taken from 'us' the tax payers and start working as what they are suppose to be

in the real world, again, having a corrupt system from top to the lowest position in the government and add to that, some common people who loves to bribe these already corrupt employees, what else can you expect?that's why, the head must be totally 'sanitized' first and everything will follow.

anyways, that's just my perception about these politicos - which makes the country poor to the poorest.

Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried.

    .....

Too much ang freedom sa Pilipinas kaya nagkakaganito tayo.

best way is upgrade your thinking. accept politics as given, and try to find out how you can make the best out of it.

in that way, hindi ka na ma-frustrate.

I'd have to go with VTEC on this one...in the current Pinoy setting, you can't expect the masses to lead the way. Philippine society doesn't have a solid base of intellectuals, who are also financially empowered, to make up a decent middle class. Traditionally, either the elite or the intellectual class lead revolutions, and set the direction.

Take a look at Marikina City. I've been there several times already, and by and large, I'm simply bowled over by the discipline exhibited by its citizens. Ang laki ng pinag-iba sa Pasay or Caloocan. Malinis at organisado ang mga tao. Wala akong nakitang nag-jaywalk or nagtapon ng basura kung saan-saan lang, and I was in Concepcion Market! Maganda talaga ang pamamalakad ni BF at yung misis nya. Sana ganun din dito sa QC, kaya lang, mukhang matagal pa...

But someday, I'm hopeful that we will change for the better. All it takes is a stern leader who is willing to implement laws, kahit sino pa masagasaan.

They say a democracy requires people who are empowered. People who can think critically and make a stand based on an ability to understand the events that are taking place.

It's so hard to analyze the problem because it's so big and everything is interrelated. Even just looking at the system of corruption in our country is difficult because it is a system that affects even the lowest levels of government and spills out to the private sector. Even honest people that wish to serve the people have to play along in order to get things done.

For things to happen, it will take a concerted effort from all sectors. Media needs to bring the truth to all people. Our education system will need to train the minds of the people to understand what is happening, know what our rights are, and react positively. But then, people need a stable source of income, etc...etc...etc...
