My two cents:
Liquidate and dispose of the existing facility. Why? Though the facility remains intact and in good shape (saw it a few years ago), the technology in the facility would deem inefficient to the current nuclear technology we have.
Solution: build a new, bigger and better nuclear plant in Luzon via the government's BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) scheme. That's what I personally think would be best as our government would only misuse taxpayer's money when getting a loan to build it. Unlike the BOT scheme, where private companies provide the funding, builds and actually operate the facility then transfered to the government, say after 40 years.

the current nuclear power plant is next to useless. it is more cost effective to just build a new plant. well, that's according to one of my profs.

June 25th, 2008 07:02 PM #34no, just turn it off.... were not that technologically advanced to handle such things. magpadala muna tayo ng satellite o khit ano sa kalawakan at yun ang magsisilbing sign na kaya na natin like what india and pakistan did pati nokor nuclear capable. pag nagloko lang yung reactor kuno na ipapagawa natin eh baka maghintay ulit tayo ng "kano" para lang maayos. saka pinagbabawal nga ng senado ang "nuclear" sa bansa natin tignan mo pati uss ronald reagan carrier group na tumutulong sa recovery ng mv princess of the stars. tsk.tsk di naman siguro magtetesting mga yun.

actually, there is no need to be technologically advance for us because we could contract someone else to do it for us. and imho, we are very capable of operating one. we have lots of people working at nasa who tinker with robotics. and being nuclear does not neccessarily mean "kaboom" all the time. besides, these babies come with a failsafe feature now adays

question is where will we put the waste? is our security forces strong enough to guard the plant and the wastes?

any chance of powering the BNPP again?
the RP is in need of efficient technology and may lower down electric bills.
or
build one again, more advance than the 80's BNPP?

I doubt if the BNPP would ever be powered up.
30 years of technological progress has made it obsolete in many ways.
There were some studies a decade ago on converting the BNPP to a conventional thermal combined cycle power station but obviously that didn't push through.
For today, it would be better to build a whole new nuclear power station using current technology for greater efficiency and safety. The problem would be getting the approval and funds for it.
Political approval would probably be the greatest hurdle, given the general anti-nuke stand of the people in senate & congress.
