Journalists blast NBI agents for posing as mediamen in Kiram residence, demand DOJ probe
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines on Thursday expressed "outrage" over the actions of three National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents who "misrepresented themselves as media practitioners to gain entry into and spy on the residence of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III on Wednesday afternoon."
Media reports said the agents - believed assigned with the NBI's Technical Intelligence Division - contacted a reporter from TV5 to say they wanted to pose as a TV5 crew to gain entry into Kiram's residence, where press conferences on the Sabah situation have routinely been held over the past weeks. Although the reporter refused to cooperate and informed the sultan's wife, Fatima Kiram, beforehand that NBI agents were coming, the agents went ahead and, once at the Kiram residence, introduced themselves as part of the reporter's party.
Media reports said the agents successfully gained entry into the Kiram residence.
"The charade pulled off by the NBI agents was not only unethical; it was downright criminal," the NUJP said. "They not only willfully endangered the reporter but all other journalists who have been covering the Kiram family amid the unfolding crisis in Sabah."
The NUJP's statement added: "As if it were not bad enough that our law enforcement agencies cannot, or will not, stop the continued murders of and attacks on journalists, they now directly place journalists’ lives at risk through such despicable tactics."
The journalists demanded that Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and NBI Director Nonnatus Ceasar Rojas immediately issue a public apology over the matter, and pledge to not let such an incident happen again. The NUJP also called on the Department of Justice (DOJ):
•"to immediately relieve, if not fire, the agents and whoever ordered them to undertake the operation; and
•"to file the appropriate administrative and criminal charges against them."
"We also demand that all other law enforcement and security agencies immediately stop the practice of impersonating journalists in the conduct of their work," the NUJP said. "We call on our colleagues not to allow themselves to be used by these agencies, and to immediately expose any attempts by them to use the media in their work."

March 7th, 2013 09:52 PM #237eto ang gusto mangyari ng mga Kiram international attention from UN (and recently the conflict was aired in BBC news) and not to win the ground battle in Sabah. Siempre yung nagsulsol naman ang gusto political dilemma for PNoy.
