1.) the title reads "Population below poverty line by country".

2.) it also says "Definitions of poverty vary considerably among nations. For example, rich nations generally employ more generous standards of poverty than poor nations."

it does not mean that because the Philippines has a lower rank than Ethiopia, that it is poorer than Ethiopia. it only means that a greater PERCENTAGE of people in the Philippines are below the poverty line as defined by the Philippine government than there are in Ethiopia as defined by the Ethiopian government. it does not speak of per capita income of the people it considers as poor.

focus also on the second quote above. the definition of poverty in Ethiopia may be that people are not able to eat once a day (most people in africa only eat once a day, that is normal to them). in the philippines poverty may be defined as "not being able to eat 3 square meals a day". big big difference there guys. a family that eats one meal per day over there is rich, a filipino family that can afford to eat only 2 meals in one day is poor in the philippines.

the survey is misleading since the subject it was trying to define, percentage of people below poverty line, did not have a common constant. the definition of poverty varies with each country, and thus the ranking is invalid.
I agree! apples to oranges ang comparison.

notice also that countries like papua new guinea (37% poverty), mongolia (36.1%), laos (30.7%), burma (25%), india (25%) and a lot of african countries had percentages below that admitted by the philippines. don't you guys think that their governments were either lying, or their definition of poverty is so darn low that a rat ecking a living in the sewers of manila will be rich in comparison? do you honestly believe those governments' statements that they only have that much poor people?

india with 25%? hahahaha! di na sana nagmistulang cardboard city ang mga kalsada nila pag dating ng gabi. at least sa pinas may squater shanty na inuuwian ang pinoy, sa india cardboard lang sa gitna ng daan. and the place stinks! nagkalat ang ebak ng tao sa kalsada. di ka man lang makalayo ng 20 meters sa harap ng 5 star hotel e makikipag-patintero ka na sa ebak. pa-landing pa lang nga ng plane amoy mo na ang ebak. so 75% are not poor but they wallow in human excrement every day? naaah! big lie made by the indian government here!

mongolia with 36.1%. hahahaha! they still live in tents! may 3 kambing ka lang dun mayaman ka na e.

burma with 25%. hahahahahahaha! kagagaling ko lang dun last february, sa capital and to the provinces. 25% poor lang? cmon! baka ang ibig nila sabihin e 25% lang ng mga generals ang hindi millionaryo!

i had to go back and check the link...yebo is right - they didn't index the poverty line to some kind of world standard. so what kind of comparison is this?! what a worthless article

another thing worth mentioning is that most of the people on Tsikot (assumption - they can afford a computer and internet access) are well above the poverty line and don't have to worry about where the RP is on that list

It depend on the people running the country. Sa tao lang talaga yan.
Did work on China though. Stepping stone lang para madisiplina yong mga tao at maging united. In this phase of corruption and unpatriotism we need all the help we can get. We need to pay the price. The US did it during their civil war, The Chinese under Mao, Taiwan under Gen Chiang kai sheik, Singapore, Vietnam againts the US...and they did succeed to unite their people.

Btw, the 40% poverty line level is not accurate anymore... the self-declared poverty level by our government is somewhere near 25-30%, which has been declared by Winnie Monsod as the lowest poverty level in the history of the Philippines.

    edit:

The percentage living below on $2 & $1 might be a better indicator:
