September 26th, 2007 06:55 AM #1The gentle smile and serene beauty of St. Bernadette has inspired millions of Catholics. Faithful followers from around the world journey to France to gaze at the sleeping beauty who rests peacefully in a glass coffin - over 125 years after her death. The church is adamant that her life-like body has never been embalmed - and that it has remained in this state without human intervention. It is hailed as a miracle. Could it be that the body of St. Bernadette truly defies the laws of science? There are those who believe differently. Organic chemists and modern day embalmers argue that there must be a logical explanation for St. Bernadette's incorruptibility. St. Bernadette was exhumed 3 times before her canonisation. In an autopsy performed on the body in 1925 - 46 years after her death, the presiding doctor claimed that the liver was "soft and almost normal." Scientists believe that by studying similar "incorruptibles" they may be able to provide answers. St. Bernadette is not the only

I have seen her and several incorruptibles in Italy (St Rita of Cassia, St Anna Tiagi, St Anthony of Padova's preserved tongue). Its truly amazing! I was told that there is just a thin layer of wax or makeup applied to the skin to hide a few imperfections. The bodies are kept in a sealed glass casket for viewing without any means to preserve them. Its truly remarkable, miraculous and faith strenghtening.
