The Senators should realize (as I'm sure they already do) that the Ligots will not answer any more of their questions, regardless of whether or not they are cited in contempt. Why? Because, while not a criminal proceeding, the testimony they give at the Senate Hearings can be considered as evidence against them in court.

AFAIK, they can be held in contempt but they can also invoke their right to remain silent as the questions of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee seeks to get them to admit to amassing wealth illegally.

The best way for the Senate to deal with them, IMHO is to recommend the filing of criminal charges for obstruction of justice (PD 1829) and the violation of Art. 150 of the RPC (disobedience to summons by a national assembly). At the very least, the Ligots will likely get convicted and jailed for a maximum of 6 years (for the obstruction of justice charge) and six months (for the disobedience to national assembly charge).

Some may find the jail term disproportionate to the crime they are being associated with (plunder), but hey, you never know if these people will start singing a different tune once they get a taste of what it's like behind bars without the comforts and luxuries they were used to. The government can also seize or freeze their assets here. The Ligots just might cut a deal and start pointing the authorities to the bigger fish behind all of these anomalies at the AFP.

Gen. Ligot to Senators: "Please release me!"

Senators to Gen.Ligot: "We refuse to answer." (in other words: Manigas ka!)

That should give him a dose of his own medicine!

CORRUPT nga si Gen. Angelo Reyes and family

Mrs. Ligot names Mrs. Reyes in trips

The jetsetting wife of beleaguered former military comptroller Gen. Jacinto Ligot named yesterday the wife of the late Armed Forces chief Gen. Angelo Reyes as her frequent companion in various travels abroad during their husbands’ terms in early 2000.

It showed Mrs. Ligot’s travel records from the Bureau of Immigration that revealed she traveled 43 times from 1999 to mid-2000. Thirteen times she traveled with Mrs. Reyes, and they were together 10 times coming back to the country. Philippine Star, 3-30-11

They will say" Kawawa naman na-biyuda na siya."

    And everyone will back off.

That is how weak our country is.
