MANILA, Philippines -- Good news for the Filipino worker.
The Philippine workforce is set to have not just one, but two long weekends, thanks to the coming barangay (village) elections and the annual observation of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Tuesday issued Proclamation No. 1403, declaring Oct. 29 (Monday) a special nonworking holiday to allow people to participate in the Sangguniang Kabataan (Youth Council) and barangay elections.
The Philippine Stock Exchange also announced that there would be no trading that day.
After a three-day rest, employees are expected to report for work on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31 (Tuesday and Wednesday). Four more days of rest follow, as Nov. 1 (Thursday) and Nov. 2 (Friday) have also been declared legal holidays.
Workers who go on leave from Oct. 30 to 31 will have a nine-day break.
According to the Department of Labor and Employment, those who will work on a special holiday will get 30 percent more than their regular daily pay.
Those who work on a special holiday, even if it fell on their rest day, will get 50 percent more than their regular daily rate.
