Businesses will pullout and relocate to other countries. US will freeze China's money.

China's navy will not survive an attack by the US 7th Fleet, and they know it.
The US has already stated they will defend Japan in case of an attack.

Just plain old saber-rattling. China doesn't have the tech to pick a war with both Japan and the US. Their huge military is all for naught if they can't land troops on Japan in force. The Japanese people are fierce fighters, and nothing but overwhelming odds will work, which is why the US resorted to nuking them instead of performing a traditional ground invasion back in WWII.

China needs to gather its people behind the government. All these "disputes" over the past year have simply been in a bid to arouse feelings of patriotism and to keep people from questioning the government, important during this transition period in party leadership.
