After the brouhaha that a late-night news program caused in its flesh-eating story, it officially apologized Thursday evening. In a 30-second segment of the news program Bandila, anchor Julius Babao read the statement.

“Bandila apologizes that their report about the two separate cases of a skin-disease caused a mass panic especially in Pangasinan,” the statement said.
Babao added that the ABS-CBN Office of the Network Ombudsman is investigating what happened.
“The ABS-CBN assures that there would be actions taken according to the results of the investigation of the ONO,” Babao said.

Dapat kasi nagtatanong sila kung saan nanggaling yung tao at baka may mga particular na sakit na sa lugar lang na yun nakukuha. Simpleng sakit namatay pa. Minsan kasi mga doktor hindi na tinatanong history nung tao, basta tingin lang sa data nang lab test. Wala naman kasi malaria sa america. Dun siya binawian diba.

Naaawa ako dun, ang sakit mamatay sa sakit na malarya. Uncle ko from DPWH need pa i-airlift dahil dyan kasi nasa bundok sila that time. Mabuti nabuhay.

Kaya lesson sa mga mahilig bumiyahe, alamin niyo mga deadly na sakit na nakukuha sa mga lugar na pinupuntahan nyo at para makapag-handa thru prevention or at least ma-inform nang tama ang doktors niyo.

DAGUPAN CITY - Who pays for the damage done as a result of an erroneous report?

This question has cropped up in view of the recent television report that a supposed flesh-eating disease is now spreading in the province of Pangasinan, causing undue alarm to the province's population of almost 3 million.

Now provincial officials are saying that broadcast network ABS-CBN should go beyond apologizing for the report aired in "Bandila", and beyond taking down the story from its website: the network, they said, should use its reach to help repair the damage to the province's reputation, tourism and fish industries.

The ABS-CBN report talked of a flesh-eating bacteria that's "spreading" in the northern Luzon province, and then featured two young people with skin diseases - neither of which turned out to be the flesh-eating disease that was detected in the US. One young woman was undergoing treatment for leprosy, which was complicated by her adverse reaction to one drug. The other case, a 21-year-old man, had psoriasis - a genetic and non-contagious ailment - complicated by arthritis, the provincial health office said.

The Psoriasis Society of the Philippines demanded an apology, saying one single report had undone years of struggle to educate the public about psoriasis, which afflicts thousands but is little understood.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona had to categorically deny the presence of the “flesh-eating disease” after the story went viral and caused alarm here and abroad.

Noting that ABS-CBN made a public apology two nights after the erroneous report, Gov. Amado Espino Jr. dared the TV station to prove its sincerity by helping repair the damage that had been done to the province.

Espino learned that many tourists going to the Hundred Islands cancelled their reservations in hotels and inns, thus causing a drain in the locals’ incomes.

Even the number of pilgrims going to Manaoag was reported to have been drastically reduced this weekend--another possible backlash. Friends, the locals said, even refused to touch and put in their mouth freshly grilled milkfish, noting that the fish came all the way from Pangasinan.

Pangasinan is famous for its Dagupan and Bonuan bangus.

Meanwhile,, Vice Gov. Jose Ferdinand Calimlim said in view of the magnitude of damage wrought by the report, in the TV station can perhaps partner with the province in promoting it as a top tourist destination like before.

Linked to prophecy

Earlier, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) which branded the TV report as a product of sensationalism and accused those who were behind the story to have unduly linked this to a supposed prophesy of a self-styled Indian prophet who earlier predicted that a disease caused by a flesh-eating bacteria will start from Pangasinan to the world.

The two Pangasinenses interviewed by the TV network said they were unaware that their medical condition will be used to link this to the supposed prophecy.
