latest Hi-Peak update (from the LandRover Club forum):
1) According to Phil and Dale A. (thanks guys!), the concession holder
has approved our entering the area, and the trail is passable by 4x4s.
The LandCr____80 Club (with running boards, side steps and mud flaps)
made it to the summit last weekend, and claim there was no water; it
seems they didn't see the fresh water spring at the end of the trail; in
any case, please bring water for washing purposes. Work to clear the
trail (and the expense) is not required.
2) Dickie bought 2 tents (easy-up type) for the Club for dining
purposes; Club is assuming this expense from the Shell funds of 2000. Please
bring tables / chairs.
3) LRCP submitted a proposal to Petron to sponsor fuel and oil for all
rovers joining this trail. If this gets approved, we will have to split
the Club cost for the video / photos deliverable to the sponsor. Will
keep you posted.
4) Due to trail capacity in relation to number of participating
vehicles, we will have to limit this trail to only LRCP members. Paolo and
Edwin C.G., sorry, but we will try to do a joint event with the other
clubs (like ai.group) in the future.
5) C! Magazine and AutoExtreme will document the trail for a feature in
the magazine and tv show; so James Deakin in a demo unit Suzuki Jimny
is joining the trail. We need to provide James with a 2 man tent; any
volunteers?

There will be other non-Rover vehicles. Some will be from Phil's group while others driven by media persons. Phil's group can't be banned because he's trail leading and he's probably the one who coordinated with C-square mining to allow use of the trail. Phil has trailed High-Peak more than half a dozen times. Once or twice in his Vitara and the rest with his Frontier.
Other vehicles are discouraged because LRCP handled the sponsorship and media invitations. Having other vehicles conquer the trail along with the Rovers will make the trail appear less difficult and doable by common 4x4 owners.
Feb 8-9 is the official date.

I completely understand that the trail site was probably reserved by the LRCP some time ago. That added to the fact that they actually have a media activity makes it even more critical for them to have the site available to them. We will have other opportunities to go there.
I was just amused by a statement above that you made which revealed something that I figure you didnt wish to imply.....
In my opinion if a trail is easy, it will look easy. Sometimes even hard trails have a way of looking easy. Keeping the more "peasant/unwashed" 4x4's out of view is not going to change this. In the same token, you could put Dale's Range Reover on the cover of the Shangrila Mall Ad and it wont make the parking lot look like the Rubicon.
The Land Rover is a competent offroader and no one questions that. I didn't think posing was necessary to reinforce that opinion. Our common 4x4's don't have to prove anything. We have no "Pedigreed Lineage" to protect. We just want to have fun in the nastiest and toughest trails our vehicles or nerves are capable of facing. I always thought that the LRCP was of the same philosophy. At least after having their afternoon tea and crumpet......
Interesting thread—really important to consider the broader impact of the National ID Law beyond...
