The Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta & Air Show 2003 will be held on February 7-9 (binago na ko na) at the Omni Aviation Aerodome, Clark Field, Pampanga.

Tourism Secretary Richard J. Gordon said, “We are optimistic that the hot air balloon and air show will be one of the biggest and exciting air show event for the Centennial celebration of Clark Field and the special events for the month of February during the ‘Visit Philippines 2003 (VPY)’.”

“The VPY will be the time when the whole world’s attention will be focused on what our country has to offer as a unique and multifaceted business and travel destination. This Philippine hot air balloon and air show will be one of the hundreds of cultural events and social extravaganzas, which will be featured nationwide throughout 2003”, Secretary Gordon added.

Through the collaboration of the Omni Aviation Corporation, DOT-Region 3 and the Clark Development Corporation, more than 50 hot air balloons, 100 pilots and flying enthusiasts from 50 countries are expected to be part of this air fiesta. They will compete in top events as the Key Grab Contest Balloons of the World, Balloon Evening Glow, Dawn Patrol Balloon Night Light, Hot Air Balloon Flag, Mass Ascensions, and Special Shapes.

World-class performers will include the Yakovlevs, the premier four aircraft aerobatic team from the United Kingdom, and the U.S. Army Golden Knights Demonstration Parachute Team. Capt. Maynard Halili in his Pitts Special bi-plane and Capt. Roy Bruce in his Extra 300L will undertake aerobatic demonstrations. Tropical Asia Parachute Club of Clark Field and the Blue Diamonds of the Philippine Air Force will also do their own air shows.

Skydiving, hang-gliding, kite flying, ultra-light plane flying, aero-modeling and other aerial shows are being organized for the three-day event. Ground activities will include a fireworks display, face painting, henna tattoos, euro bungee, wall climbing, live bands and others.

The First Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Festival has been a favorite air show held in Clark Field’s Parade Grounds since 1994. It has inspired various aerosports enthusiasts to stage other air-related events in the 2,500 hectare aviation complex of the former U.S. military facility.

The Clark Field Air Force Base was established by the United States in 1903 until it was converted into the Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) when the U.S. troops pulled out in 1991. From a formidable fortress of American military might, the CSEZ is now bustling with 21,650 employees of about 312 foreign and local factories and business centers. It is equipped with two 3.2 kilometer parallel runways and a vast apron facility that remain unmatched in the Philippines today. This economic zone has world-class golf courses, picnic grounds and water theme parks, as well as museums, century-old barn houses, anti-aircraft cannons, aircraft parks and duty-free shopping. It is also a convenient jump
