To OTEP and other vehicles coming from Manila on Apirl 11th:

afrsay, kimpOy and me have pre-arranged to leave Manila around 12 noon. Can you make it by that time? But if it will not fit your schedule, we may have to adjust it. Let us know.

A letter from Mr. Phil G.

On April 12 some friends and I are meeting in Iba, Zambales at Palmera
Resort (047) 811-2109 at 9 AM SHARP for our trip up Hi Peak. Palmera is
roughly 4 km north of Iba town proper on the west side of the road as you
head north along the coastal road. We'll spend the night of April 12 at the
Hi Peak campsite, and drive down April 13. For those of you who haven't
been to Hi Peak, its roughly 6000 ft above sea level, is on private land
managed by C Squared Mining Co with lots of pines, mossy forest, deer,
various bird life, and an afternoon/evening fog that cools everything down
to jacket weather. Things to bring include: spares for your 4x4 vehicle,
full tank of fuel, water for washing and drinking, food for lunch and
dinner on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday, 2 way radio for each
vehicle, tent and sleep bag, good walking shoes for hike to summit (about
an hours walk from campsite), and warm jacket for 50 degree F weather.

Since this trip is just before Holy Week, instead of returning to Manila, I
will head north from Hi Peak to either Barlig or Batad or Besang Pass
(between Cervantes and Suyo on the Sagada-South China Sea road, where we
camp at DENR station) until april 17, when I am due in Sagada. I will leave
Sagada for Manila april 21. Some notes on each:

    1. Barlig, Mt Province - this is the gateway to Mt Amuyao, the second
highest in Luzon. Barlig itself is worth the trip, beautiful setting
rivalling Sagada with pine forest, a river through the center of town, and
rice terraces everywhere. Involves one full day of hiking to and from Amuyao.

    2. Batad, Ifugao Province - Unesco World Heritage site, jewel of a village
among majestic rice terrace ampitheatre setting. 3 hour hike to and from
Batad from Banaue. Overnight in Batad.

    3. Besang Pass, Ilocos Sur - site of fierce WW 2 battle, but now a
collection of mountains, deep valleys, THICK pine forests, waterfalls (in
November when I was there last), rivers to cross and explore. This would
not necessarily involve any hiking, since we'll camp at DENR station just
off the road near the Besang Pass summit.

I'm alloting April 14-15-16 for any ONE of the above, since I have to be in
Sagada April 17, where interested parties can join me as well. Many of you
on this mailing have already expressed interest in Hi Peak. Just let me
know ASAP if you are interested in any of the other 3 options and even
Sagada so I can start planning.

    Cheers / Phil
