what's the real difference between an AUV and an SUV. the CRV was known as an SUV but when they added extra seats it became an AUV. why is the XUV not an SUV? why is the everest not an AUV?

    nice question..

ung evereset, ewan ko bakit naging suv, pero pick-up based siya. based on ford ranger.

not sure kung bakit, lets wait for the tsikot gurus na lang

Traditional SUVs are frame-rail, full-sized vehicles on ladder frames. They are built for off-roading and for towing heavy loads. Originally SUVs were designed as the ultimate road-trip vehicles, but they have generally devolved into big cars.

The Everest qualifies as a full SUV due to its size, power and ability. There is not much difference between an Everest and an Old Pajero or Trooper. Many modern SUVs were developed off of pick-up platforms, so don't complain it's not real!

SUVs traditionally have powerplants in the 2.8 to 3+ liter diesel range, and the 3+ liter gasoline range.

AUVs (Asian Utility Vehicles) are built with passenger-carrying capacity in mind. They are NOT AWD nor are they offered with an AWD option (so far). Neither are they rated for towing, as the suspension and drivetrain are not built heavily enough. The AUV bracket developed from tax restrictions and economic needs. AUVs traditionally have smaller footprints than SUVs, no towing capacity, and more interior seating space. AUVs traditionally have 1.8 - 2.5 liter diesel and 1.8 - 2.0 gas engines.

The new Crosswind XUVi does have some Trooper suspension bits, but power-wise and ability-wise, doesn't qualify as a full SUV.

CUVs (Compact Utility Vehicles) are baby SUVs, commonly built on a car chassis and with car engines. The Vitara doesn't qualify... it is a true SUV, built on frame-rails and set-up for off-roading. CUVs are rarely offered with diesel (although there is a 2.2 d X-Trail) and are not generally tow-rated...

CUVs have more off-roading capability than AUVs, but don't have the heavy-duty undercarriage to go where true SUVs go.

The CR-V is truly a CUV. It is the car that created the class.

    SUV
    -frame rail chassis
    -full-sized
    -large engine
    -available AWD
    -heavy duty suspension (traditionally leaf-spring)
    -high towing capacity
    -seats 5-7
    * A lot of modern SUVs have fully independent suspensions, non-frame-rail chassis, and no off-roading ability whatsoever... they are merely classified as SUVs because that's the market segment they target.

    CUV
    -car chassis
    -small-medium sized
    -car engine
-car suspension (typically coil and strut)
    -available AWD, usually FWD
    -seats 5-7

    AUV
    -frame-rail chassis
    -medium sized
    -midsized engine
-lighter suspension than SUV, traditionally leaf-spring
    -RWD only
    -not towing-rated
    -seats 7-12

Not a definitive guide, but a good rule-of-thumb guide nonetheless.

    AUV= Asian (ALL) Utility Vehicle
dito lang na coined yang classification na vehicle na yan.
dati nga walang pang classification yan nung time nung Tamarraw/Cimmaron/Fiera XLT

then dumating na ang FX...then the Adventure, Hilander (then the Crosswind) and Revo dun na naging AUV.
tapos nag add pa ng fender flares ang isuzu sa corsswind and lifted a few inches kaya nag mukhang macho ang crosswind.

    SUV=Sport Utility Vehicle
it started out as an utility vehicle in the early age, mga broncos and the blazers nung 60s or 70s, then ne developed ito to be a people mover in the modern era. adding some sportiness to the rugged vehicle, thus the name.

now as for the honda's scheme, they found a loophole sa dating excise tax law dati kaya nakapasok ang CRV as AUV by defintion.
nagunggungan ang govt kaya super bilis na amendahan ang excise law.

That's not far from the truth, actually... AUVs aren't sold in Europe or America.

AUVs were developed as a cheaper alternative to other forms of transport, and as such, don't meet the stricter safety and emissions requirements of American and European markets... also, they're not much different in use from vans, which those other markets find roomier and more attractive.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Ah ok. Nalito kasi ako dati, bakit Pajero classified as AUV sa price list ng car mag (C! yata or something, basta local). Naisip ko baka dahil dito lang yung Pajero, kasi Montero sa US. A basta, magulo... Hehe.

    Tnx for the clarification.

    the_wildthing,

dati naka-classify ang CRV as AUV sa pricelist nila.. and pati din yung dating pajero.. mga pinilit na 10-seater mga ito,

pag AUV kasi ang category eh mababa na excise tax ang babayaran ng mga car manufacturers (mga 3% lang yata instead of more than 10%) ..
