occasionally i hear a loud screeching (sounds like metal on metal) when i start the car after a few days of non use.

sometimes there is no screeching until i turn on the a/c.

goes back to normal after 30 seconds or so.

what could be the reason for this?

2000 cefiro, about 102000 kms, had service done at around 100k.

any place where i can get this checked besides gallery on libis (heard not so pleasant things and had strange experience there)

I'm about 98% sure that it's belt slippage. 2% could be the idler pulley bearing.

Try Speedyfix along Shaw Blvd. beside Puregold, I agree with the poster above that it might be the bearing, also check the condition of the fan belts (aircon, alternator and power steering). Good luck.

Not necessarily if you can tolerate the annoying noise it makes. But it is recommended that you have it looked at as it could be a sign of a loose or worn-out belt. If it's the latter, it could snap any time and put you in an inconvenient situation.

screech on cold start
