Has anyone tried to put a sack of sand sa pick-up bed nila? How many kilos?

Last night kasi, I brought home a sack of rice but I placed it sa rear passenger seat instead of the pickup bed coz medyo cautious ako baka mabasa ng ulan. I noticed the difference in the ride and manuverability ng pickup. Here are the changes:

Ride without sack of rice: Was bouncy before specially sa humps and lubak.
Ride with sack of rice: Its like my pickup was glued to the road. The bounce was lessened and the steering vibrations (specially when I accidentally drive over potholes) were minimized.

    Manuverability with SOR: Good cornering

Yun nga lang, medyo lalakas sa consumption ng diesel coz of the added weight.

Question ko lang to those who practice this,
Is there any negative effects if I do this permanently?
Is there a difference if I put the sack at my pickup bed (last night kasi nasa passenger seat sa rear)
How many kilos do you carry?

Our driver practices extra load with couple of toolboxes under the seats. Probably weighs 15kgs. for both.

I used to carry an added 10kgs. of sealed pack sand behind my FX.

IMO poor gas mileage with sack on board

The added weight doesn't add that much to fuel consumption compared to wasted fuel on daily rush hour traffic. Infact you'd be wasting more fuel in a 2 hour traffic jam than running 60km/h with 30 sack on board.

    Ungas,
got your point there. Come to think of it, running with a 50 kilo sack of sand is just the same as driving with my younger brother. Mas mabigat pa nga yata siya sa 50 kilos eh..hehe.

Sige I'll be trying the trick this weekend. Probably a 50 kilo sack of sand would do right? ..to be placed on my pickup bed.

    Thanks and Wish me luck!

agree ako dito. proof of this is... when I drive to the Laguna na fully packed AUV ko, alang difference sa mileage/fuel consumption vs. when I drive by myself or w/ one passenger. Advantage pa nga siguro kung marami passengers or mas mabigat load kasi mas malakas momentum ng sasakyan kaya mas pwede kang mag-inertial driving. mas hirap sa arangkada, pero once you're up and running... ala nang effect.
Pwera na lang siguro kung puro uphill driving ka with a heavier load, dun lang siguro lalakas fuel consumption.

why not place (bolt) a weight (ung commercially available na weights ng barbel) sa underside ng bed....pedeng 40Kg, 50Kg or even less kasi it is sold at different weights.

    Wildthing,
Weights na bolt-on? San nakakabili nito?

    Afrasay,
..hehe, but now you're actually driving one!

I'm thinking of putting a 50 kilo sack of sand sa likod. Bili nalang ako sa hardware on saturday. Nga pala, do you think a 50kilo sack would make my rear sag? I was thinking kasi baka ang sagwa tingnan kung pumantay ang rear ko sa front...Whatyathink?

yes i drive a pick-up. this is how the sand bag looks. had it wrapped in canvas the one being used in owner type jeeps roofs. cost 150.00 for the bag, 50.00 for the sand.

100kgs. handicapped weight will be subjective to fuel consumption, it will depend how the driver steps on the gas pedal.

Nabasa ko dati, up to 3 people running at 60km/h on overdirve gear can save on consumption, assuming that each person weighs 50-70kgs. Compared to a single occupant stuck in a 2 hour traffic.

    Djerms,

Using weights to improve your truck's ride is probably not the best thing to do. For one thing, you worsen the economy and performance (acceleration and cornering) of the truck. If you dont use your truck for anything else, like hauling heavy payloads, then softer springs and dampers would be a better way to achieve the ride you are looking for. The only difficulty I see in this is finding a replacement spring (with a softer spring rate) for your front suspension. The rears can easily be softened by reducing the number of leaves.

Usually, weights are added for the purpose of improving traction. But if you do need to add weights, I suggest you put them as low as possible, and preferably on top or behind the rear axle. That should give your truck a more neutral cornering tendency, and might even help reduce body roll if the weights are lower than the truck's center of gravity.

    ebbfolls,
Thanks for the tip. Modifying my suspension parts is really the way to go but I dont have the $$$ to spend for now. Also, mahirap nga maghanap nung spring ko for my front suspension.
I'll probably be doing this weight trick muna, for now.

Like ARB, i'll be putting the 50kilo bag on my pick-up bed. I'm still thinking if I could put more though.

    ARB,
where did you buy the canvass? Is this also available sa ating suking hardware?
