starting the engine is not possible when your timing belt breaks down. I remember my uncle had his pajero serviced changed the timing belt since he already reached 80K km, instead of using an original timing belt bumili cya ng replacement lng and while he was driving at 80kph there was a "toktok" sound and the engine shutdown. when the mechanic opened the engine naputol daw yung timing belt and tumukod yung mga pistons kaya full overhaul ang ginwa.

You can also open the timing belt cover. It's made of plastic and is usually just held by two bolts. It is on the same side where the fanbelts of your vehicle are.

If you cannot see the belt anymore, then its broken.

To add, if you have an interference engine, you'll need to overhaul it as well. Top overhaul yata tawag dun.

don't wait until your timing belt gets broken and makes your day as well as your pocket miserable. have it replaced religiously at certain mileage/time intervals as recommended in your vehicle manual.

same what happened to me more than 3 yrs. ago Ginago yung trabaho ng mga lintek na "siraniko" na yun sa Banawe.

) hehe!

are there any symptoms before the timing belt finally gives way? umiingay din ba siya tulad ng fan belt pago pumiglas?

    uu nga naman...LOL

every 80km daw ang safest maintenance ng timing belt. wag na paabutin ng 100km. i think walang symptoms ito before masira. better safe than sorry. buy original timing belt na rin para you'll have someone to blame pag nasira agad.

Almost none. That's why t-belt replacement is part of maintenance. Whether the belt is good or not, you will have to replace it when the time comes.

Just did the t-belt replacement on the Vitara (called the '80K PMS). Had it done at home by the underground Suzuki mechanics.

    Replaced the following:
    -Timing belt
    -T-belt tensioner
-T-belt cover (the old one had a crack, allowing contaminants to reach the belt)
    -Cranskshaft seal
    -Camshaft seal

Also took the time to replace the following:
    -Valve cover gasket
    -Distributor O-ring
    -Sparkplug O-rings x 4
    -PCV valve
    -Spark plugs
    -Water pump
    -2 fanbelts

Parts cost almost 10k (all OEM except for the fanbelts and filters, the water pump was the killer * Php3,xxx++)

Labor was Php3k which included brake adjustments, timing adjustment, valve clearance adjustment, coolant flushing, change oil, and other minor items.

just wanna make sure mga bos, whenever one replaces the timing belt of his ride, automatically the timing belt tensioner is also replaced, right ? what other parts are also essentially due for replacement once the timing belt is up for a change?

All the parts I listed are the necessary parts to be replaced as per Suzuki's recommendation.

Some of the parts are not really due for replacement, but since the engine is apart already, it makes sense to replace at the same time to lessen labor costs.

Yes, it's a must to get a new tensioner. The water pump and crank/cam seals are also a good idea since you won't be visiting that part of the engine for the next ten years or so.

Usually there's none. You just have to follow your preventive maintenance schedule. You know what? Come to think of it, that's the problem with auto servicing in the Phils. A lot of the problems here could have been addressed if we follow PMS.

even if the car has not reached the tbelt replacement mark pero matagal na in terms of years dapat palitan na yan.
