    First Ever "Creative Commons" Car
The Rally Fighter is the first-ever crowd-sourced "creative commons"-like car, is the culmination of 35,000 designs by 2,900 community members from over 100 countries. Local Motors, the company behind it, plans to change forever the way cars are designed.

For starters, Local Motors doesn't even have a designer for their cars on staff. Each major system of the vehicle — whether it's the exterior design, interior design or doors — heck, even the name — are developed in an open source development process. Once there's enough support for any single design, Local Motors will develop it openly. That means members of the Local Motors community not only choose which designs are developed, but also, they get to help develop them. Contests are held for the development and the winner receives a monetary prize based on the importance of the system to developing the overall vehicle. Thus, door design might receive less money than say, exterior design.

That includes the "where" as well as the what. Local Motors cars are built in regional micro-factories. The first vehicle the community chose to build — the Rally Fighter — will be built at both Local Motors' headquarters in Massachusetts, but also in Arizona, where the car — built for off-road and desert races of the American Southwest — will be primarily used. Each car the Local Motors community designs will be based on regional desires, tastes and preferences.

i love their open source infrastructure. i didn't know you can translate that from software dev to automotive field. very cheeky letting others do the hard work. but we do have bayanihan though, sadly, only few want to participate

    https://localmotors.com/MattJackson/...-car-platform/

Local Motors sports car design challenge project brief:

At the base level, this platform would be a stripped down, super high performance (street legal) track car, in the same vein as the Ariel Atom, the KTM X-Bow, the Caterham 7 and it's many knockoffs, etc. We could then,on the same platform, add a full body, radio, air conditioning, cruise control, powered seats, etc. With a body on it, it becomes something entirely different, a full featured sports coupe, something like a Z car or an S2000, or even a 240SX, and would take on a different name.

To eliminate the possibility of confusion, the intent is not to build a modular car, but rather to build a car platform. From this platform we will be able to build at least 2 distinct cars, and they will leave the factory as such. They should, however, be easily customized, and I would expect that we will see a lot of community generated mods.

So to go about getting this process started, we are going to start narrowing down the direction that the design will go. Here are the things that have already been decided, in order to hit the market we are shooting for:

    - Base model should include a 4 cylinder turbocharged engine, producing horsepower figures in the mid 200s
    - Vehicle weight for the stripped down version should be as light as possible, preferably under 1600 lbs.
    - Two seats, side by side configuration
    - Front engine, rear drive
    - manual transmission (with a clutch!)
    - Independent suspension front and rear
    - Track variant base model shooting for in the range of $30k build cost or less.
Deadline for submissions is on Aug. 29, 2014.
