    Boycott remittance for 2 days?

    ano effect nyan?

Did that ever work?

Besides, even if that 2 day boycott succeeds, it wont have any effect. The economy wont feel a thing.

Siguro 6 month boycott pwede pa ma-hurt ang economy. Around 6B dollars yan.

But who is that boycott gonna hurt more? The economy or the dependents?

Blame the weak dollar on Bush.

Tax cuts and govt super-overspending and trade deficit with China sent the dollar into free fall.

If OFW wants a more stable USD/PHP exchange rate, dapat siguro magtayo ng OFW USD Stabilization Fund.

    1. OFW will remit USD at a lower rate, let say the current int'l rate is $1=P45, the OFW will get $1=P40, the P5 will be kept as a reserve fund.

    2. If the USD get stronger, OFW will still get $1=P40, and the difference between the current int'l exchange rate will again be kept as a reserve.

    3. If the USD get weaker or PHP get stronger, the OFW will still get $1=40, and the deficit will be taken from the reserve fund.

There should be an org/union/association who will manage the reserve. Maybe a banking institution can manage/handle this fund. They can even sign in OFWs as their customer. The OFW can use automatic remittance thru bank. The reserve will have to be build up until it is big enough to subsidize weakening USD or stronger PHP. Only those who joined the scheme long enough will benefit on a more stable dollar exchange.

There are some complications with this idea, like the effect of blackmarket, illegal remittances, padala thru kaibigan...etc...

boycotting remittances is a very shortsighted view, we should think of a longer term plans, inde yung para ngayon o bukas lang, dapat mas mahabang panahon.

This is just an idea and it is not perfect, it has plenty of holes and pitfalls....fell free to build on this one by contributing more ideas.

for those people who are thinking that the exchange rate is the sole gauge of our economy's "growth" or strength... you're wrong. yeah the exchange rate is going down, yahoo! but take a look at the prices of goods? bumababa ba? hindi. tumataas parin. the buying power of the peso doesnt improve, it deteriorates.

para sa taong hindi ofw at sumasagot ng kung anu ano... easy lang. hindi mo alam ang effect ng pagbaba ng dollar sa mga ofw. i for one was raving before when the usd is down. but sa mga sumasahod ng dollar, yung pagbaba ng exchange rate is like having a pay cut. you exert the same effort on work but you get less in salary. another thing, hindi mo rin alam ang mga nararamdaman ng isang ofw dahil hindi ka ofw. isa pa... ganun siguro kadali sa mundo mo na papuntahin ang buong pamilya kung san ka bansa nagtatrabaho. i wish it is the same in the real world... besides, not all ofw's would want to stay in another country for a long time. so bringing the family to that country is not really an idea worth pondering on.

i believe that the 2 day boycott wouldnt make a difference. like what some of you here say, after those 2 days, the volume of remittance will just make up for the lost 2 days. kung ganun lang kadali sana mabago ang exchange rate... but it is a complex thing.

on another note, actually hindi lang naman ofw's ang naapektuhan nito eh.. even the big businesses. in fact a couple of days ago, manny pangilinan aired his thoughts about the government controlling a bit the "strength" of the peso. imagine, pldt... complaining about it. big thing right?

Last two years, when we got our house construction loan from the bank, the rate was 56 to 1 pesos, so we decided to fix our rate at 11.5% per annum at 5 years..coz we're afraid the usd will fall at 60 to 1..

    and it prove us wrong...

maybe if you have the guts to be an ofw, na magisa lang sa ibang bansa at nangangarap ng maayos na buhay para sa pamilya sa pilipinas... maybe... just maybe you will know what the ofws are feeling, and not be insensitive with your remarks.

of course mas importante and pinas, no doubt about it. but imagine what the philippines now if not for the money being sent by ofws. dont tell me the philippines wont be far off from what it is now.
