i also like the nostalgia of driving my old car. even if something breaks down from time to time.
hindi bale. mau-ubusan din yan ng dapat palitan.

i liked our old air-cooled VW. hindi masyadong nag-breakdown, dahil wala masyadong piyesa, compared to today's cars.
only problem was the low-output alternator. because of the aircon, the battery drained fast, and we would push-start her.
i should have bought that higher-output alt..., except that we were too impoverished then. estudyante lang kami noon...
    heh heh.

Naalala ko na naman yung Vanette ko dati na pinalitan ko ng LD20II. Slow as f*ck but averages 14km/liter of diesel on long drives. Like a moving fridge even on noontime heat after I replaced its a/c compressor with a bnew zexel that cost me 8k via 1Rotary then replaced the 2 condenser fans with a nippondenso high-speed unit for the smaller one and a calsonic dual fan for the bigger one. Also removed the middle jump seat and moved the reclinable bench forward for a 7 seater setup which resulted in gazilions of leg room and lots of luggage space.

Naging gripe ko after that setup is lugi ako pag very long drives. Lahat ng pasahero ko naka fully-recline ang seats as in higa talaga and may kanya kanyang unan at kumot kasi saksakan talaga ng lamig. Ang sasarap ng tulog samantalang ako.....

Yes bro, the ever reliable zexel compressor..... I remember that when I replaced the unit...

If they're all sleeping, especially our midnight drive to Baguio... I would then turn on the volume of the mp3 stereo (The Corrs then were very popular) and I would sing loudly, together with our middle kid who's riding in the 4th row! Yeah!!!

    Nobody complained...

    "Go on
    Go on
    Come on
    Leave me
    Breathless!!!!"

    OT:
In the case of the VW Beetle:

And the cup of gasoline (carburetor) that overfloweth is on top of the alternator....

And the battery underneath the passenger seat with metal coil springs....

    Instant fire !!!

the aficionadoes already remedied them. heh heh.
    may bubong na ang alternator.
but in truth, if you maintain the carburator, it won't rain on the alternator.

may bubong rin ang battery. hindi na siya tatama sa metal springs ng seat, kahit na si dabiana ang umupo.

what i miss about the old cars.
fixing them is an exercise in logical thinking.

Doc- that's arguably German engineering at its best, fwd, air cooled and with a spare engine.....😉😎😍

    btw, it's rwd.

    back to topic.
vanette would have been nice, except for the heat issue.

    Thanks doc.

All these years, I thought it was fwd....

Or I knew that it was rwd and I have now forgotten..

Yes, I think I remember now, it is a direct drive from the "spare engine"...
