The motor is actuated when you turn the steering wheel so this explains why when you turn the wheel the opposite way, the noise disappears since the motor burn out safety feature has been released and the motor can turn freely. Even hydraulic power steering has a safety release valve that will transfer pressure when maximum turn has been reached so the hydraulic hoses will not rupture due to immense pressure.
The brake noise can be caused by dirt and brake dust that have accumulated in your drum and disk brakes. Rust in your brake rotors may have accumulated overnight while parked. Now its rainy season, the brake is wet most of the time. The brake disk can be scratched by small rocks, road dirt and even the brake dust when you press on the brakes hard. Remember that the brake lining is semi metalic with no asbestos. The noise is caused by contact between two non smooth surfaces. Now its rainy season and there is flooding in some areas in the metropolis during huge downpours, you may need to have the brakes serviced every time you run through a flooded road and immerse your GL's brakes in the process.
If in doubt, have your GL checked and serviced if need be.
