Recently read in an ad of, apparently, a new turbo installed in the diesel engine of the Toyota Fortuner.
I think they call it VARIABLE Nozzle Turbo - sounds so much like the VARIABLE-GEOMETRY TURBO (V-GT) installed in the new Monteros.
Reading thru the specs, though, the Fortuner 3.0L diesel variant "only" churns out 163/3400 ps/rpm of horses & 343Nm/1400-3200rpm of pull & compared against the Montero 2.5L V-GT diesel engine. it pales, relatively, in output on both counts (175/4000 ps/rpm & torque of 350Nm/1800-3500rpm).
Is this really a new turbo tech similar to V-GT? If yes, how come it generates lesser output even with a higher engine displacement?
(I am not familiar with the numbers of the previous 3.0L turbo-diesel engine of the Fortuner.)

the very first batch of fort 3.0 (2005) is already VNT. they didnt change a thing since then. i was expecting that they will bring the 2.5 variants with VNT, pero wala eh(only in thailand), so same engines since the time they were introduced in 2005-present

sir zix meron na daw d2 pinas fortuner 2.5 g vnt equipped, dko lang ma recall kung saan, nabasa ko lang din sa ibang thread, any way
torque output courtesy of its 2KD-FTV mill, these being 144 PS at 3,400 rpm and 343 Nm at 1,600 to 2,800 rpm. This is a significant increase from the 102 PS and 260 Nm from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm. The 4 SPEED ECT transmission has been retained for the automatic variant, according to data from the website. tanong ko lang cno mas malakas 4D56 crdi DOHC w/o turbo/intercooler VS. 2KD-FTV crdi DOHC w/o turbo/intercooler. tnx

Thanks for the clarification. Apparently, while both technologies enhance output from turbine-powered engines, our V-GT appears to create more output & efficiency given a smaller displaced power plant. Reading further on the technology, the Porsche 911 turbo runs on twin VNTs pala. Interesting...

Might be 7Newt-meter lower, but the torque is available at a lower RPM, 1400 vs. the Montero's 1800.... (Now, the engine displacement is a different story)....

This could translate to a better acceleration for the new Fort but the Monty could always catch-up due to the added power/torque.

Advantage of getting the hp and torque at a lower RPM is that you don't have to floor it therefore more savings on crude. It is interesting to know the FC of the new Fortuner.

mas maganda talaga yung hp and torque at a lower rpm, but then there is no basis of comparison, 2.5 and a 3.0 liter. yung vnt na 2.5 sana, but definitely it has a different torque graph than that of the 3.0.

    144PS * 3,400 rpm
    343Nm * 1,600-2,800 rpm

    transmission remains the same
    4 speed w/ ECT
