The a/t is inherently more water resistant since water cannot just enter through the clutch and through the top of the tranny (where the stickshift usually goes into). The shifter in the cabin of an a/t Pajero is not physically connected to the tranny underneath. It is just a controller. The a/t dipstick opening is also fairly high. Headlamp level, AFAIK.
It's also easier to tow with the a/t. At least based on my experience. No need to slip the clutch like crazy (this sometimes happen when I'm using the m/t to tow).
A/T is very convenient.
Disadavantages would probably include being more screwed if water should enter the transmission and less engine braking compared to the m/t variant.

You cannot jumpstart an automatic. Strictly speaking, you also should not jump start a manual transmission (nasa owner's manual iyan). Just bring a good set of jumper cables.
Not sure about consumption. You can engine brake by shifting into a lower gear. But a manual will still provide more compression braking.

Personally, I prefer a matic. Nagkataon lang na walang a/t ang '96 Pajero. Some of our matics here are 1981 vintage and have yet to give any problems. However, a/t repairs can be costly should you end up purchasing a unit with a bum tranny.

January 18th, 2007 12:21 PM #38ayt...thanks bros....big big help...pro mukang mas mhal ang price ng matic units compared to manual of the same model ryt?

The matics will command a higher price because they are '99-up units. Manuals are '99-down only. And finding a local unit with 4m40 engine mated a manual is like finding a needle in a haystack as these came out for only one model year. Most manuals run behind a 4d56 motor.
