by default, overdrive is always on meaning it goes up to the highest gear. when you turn it off (by pushing that little button on the side of the gear shift lever), the gear will only reach the second to highest (only 3rd if you have a 4-speed a/t or up to only the 4th if you have a 5-speed a/t).
the effect is similar to downshifting creating higher rpm's when needed for example in overtaking. trade off will be consumption of more gas.
try to experiment, when in your top cruising speed, let say 100kph, then turn over drive off, you will feel the rpm of the engine getting higher thus giving the needed umppph

i for one rarely use o/d off but it helps you know when to use it and how it works.
