Hmmm, 4D56 has a common rail version that's used in Indonesia...
Although I'm hoping they use the a "de-tuned" version of the 4N15

Actually Euro 4 standard compliance is one reason why they are opting on creating MPV's like the Avanza, Passo Sette(Alza), Livina, Mobilio and other similar vehicles, however, the main reason to the shift in design is the cost-effectiveness of the FF layout of such compact MPV's (save for the Avanza) along with the monocoque chassis design. A ladder on monocoque frame similar to the Crosswind and the Advie will require the use of a torquey high displacement engine and in other countries, a higher displacement engine amounts to a higher cost unlike in the Philippines whereby the road tax rate is based on the weight of the car (California DMV system) than engine displacement.
In Malaysia for instance, there's only a 2.0 Innova available, and no diesel option, that is because the 2.0 will cost some RM380(X 11.50 Petots)= 4370 petots. The Diesel trim will cost a cool RM880 or 10120 petots a year, those rates exclude the price of comprehensive insurance, but if you only have to haul 7 souls and does not require the size of a full-size MPV, you can either buy a Passo Sette, Avanza, or Livina or a Mobilio that will only set you back a cheap and cheerful RM90 or 1035 petots/year.
Going back to the Advie, I'm not sure if somebody has asked this question, but it boggles the mind why at this day and age the Advie still doesn't have ELR seatbelts in the 2nd and the third row, the Advie could've been Mitsubishi's cash cow in other markets if it only has ELR seatbelts in the mid section and at the back...

I totally agree with you that the monocoque chassis design and FF layout will benefit the manufacturers since they will save costs...
The system is also lighter which means better fuel efficiency numbers. They can also share the platform with other cars (e.g. Mobilio - BRV - Brio - Amaze share the same platform, same is also done by Subraru with ALL their cars/SUVs) which means savings in design and testing.
BUT, the Crosswind and Adventure has been available for so long, the $$ spent for platform design/research/development should have been earned by now.
Honestly, I think Mitsubishi and Isuzu should just update their engines... And maybe include safety features (like ABS)
As for Malaysia having only a Petrol version of the Innova... Gas is so cheap there (government subsidized) I'm actually surprised every time I see a diesel vehicle
someones are (at last!) loudly asking, "why did they turn off the countdown timers?"
SC (temporarily) stops NCAP
