It was not a full moon a few nights ago.

But I was singing that song with our youngest kid, when our plane was circling JFK...

Like when it hit Chris Cross .....

I just realized that more than horsepower, it's really gearing that determines how quickly a car accelerates and how high its top speed is.

Over the past month, been driving my Mazda 3 2.0 4AT, Altis 1.6 6MT, Altis 1.6 4AT, and Civic 1.8 5AT on long highway trips.

Turns out the Altis MT out-accelerates the Civic thanks to its close gear ratios. It reaches 200 kph quicker than the Civic since the Civic has a long 4th gear so acceleration from 175-200 is pretty slow despite having 141 hp. The Altis has a short 4th and 5th gear so you really get to maximize all 122 hp.

The Altis AT and Mazda 3 suffer the same problem brought about by their ancient 4ATs - slow from 50-80 due to the long second gear, then acceleration from 180 onwards is almost non-existent due to the very long 4th gear.

All in all, the 11th gen Altis MT is the most fun to drive not just because it's an MT but because it has the best gear ratios.

i just read on twitter (it was posted on fb but since i don't have a fb account that's where i found the retweeted piece) the outcry of a young angry visayan lady who was educated at u.p. for college (not sure which campus in manila). apparently this ranting was sparked by last week's bar exam results where no manileno finished in the top 10 w/c led some people to speculate that there was a test leakage of some sort (if i recall correctly, i read some of this kind of talk here at tsikot too).

she ranted about the discrimination she got while studying here in manila just because she hailed from the visayas and i have to agree w/ her. since i spent a big chunk of my twenties in davao city ( i'm a manila boy through and through but my parents are of visayan and mindanoan extracts), i've heard stories about this kind of localized discrimination from friends and girls i have dated

come to think of it, back in college i had cebuano schoolmates and friends in "liberal" ateneo who were really miffed by this unfair ostracism since their tagalog was poor and they had a hard time expressing themselves in pilipino subjects ( most especially in philosophy where classes were mostly held in deep flowery tagalog). for some reason the davaoenos, ilonggos, and bacolodnons had a better grasp of the "national language" than my cebuano peers so they assimilated better in the campus

so it got me wondering, do peeps from ilocos, pampanga, tarlac, batangas and other luzon provinces experience the same kind of vicious bigotry from manilenos. i know they're unfortunately ridiculed too but i think not in the same level of our visayan and mindanaon siblings

For provinces in Luzon, it's the Kapampangans that I think are more discriminated against by Tagalogs. I've witnessed this in my family, school and work.

Most of my friends are from Bacolod and Iloilo so I'm not guilty of bigotry against Visayans
