Remembering the previous six winters. A few close calls but not a scratch for us.
These folks weren't as lucky. Even 4x4 vehicles weren't immune. When you lose traction on ice, you lose traction, period. 4x4 or AWD is no use.

That is so scary! Why does that happen? Something to do with the tires or the driving?

Well, it's very slippery road conditions due to either ice or snow. During winter, we expected the roads to be full of snow and ice. So, it's a no-brainer to slow down. The thing is, a lot of other drivers tended to be cocky. They'd either speed or tailgate and then end up off the road or crashing into other vehicles.

A phenomenon called freezing rain can also occur where supercooled water droplets (water in liquid form with freezing temperatures) fall as rain and then freeze on contact. Very nasty. The road becomes a solid sheet of ice. No traction whatsoever. I probably gained the gray hairs I have during a couple of bad freezing rain episodes.

My German boss has snow tires or something that is installed in the tires during winter. For traction daw. It that required by law in the US?

It's good practice but not required by law, at least in the states I lived in. I know in Nevada, drivers are required to have snow chains during winter or else they can't drive on the mountain passes of I-80 during heavy snow.

I miss the well treated roads in the northeast. Had my fair share of snow storms and who could forget the 2012 nor'easter. Didn't have snow tires, my tires are all weather I believe.
