I think it's because of social media. Friends posting about their travels.

Our millenials here at work take long vacations 2 to 3 times a year. Not necessarily abroad but they love spending their money on traveling. When I was their age, I spent my money on gadgets and assembled my first ever desktop pc. Going out was mostly just the mall and movies, perhaps a concert or 2.

Why are people so addicted to travelling abroad? I even have relatives and friends who are abroad more than they are at home

Also, it seems like it is acceptable to spend money on travel but not on material objects. I am just glad I am not addicted to travel, otherwise I would be so broke right now. Basta rule ko, if it's not free, I am not going It's a very expensive "bisyo"

Because you have to travel while your young and able physically and still got to really enjoy it.

Ang panfitag travel pag matanda na. Hirap na sa long haul flights tapos pag dating sa place hinde n am enjoy dahil hinde makalad etc.

My rule is while still young travel the farthest na kaya mo mapuntahan na countries.

Now, now. No need to tell people how to spend their money. I wish my wife would quit going to the casino every few months or so. But, it's her paycheck. So, I don't say anything. ;)

To travel is to learn so for me that's better than accumulating material stuff w/c one tends to outgrow anyway

Btw I learnt from an american backpacker based in japan that he's noticed that we've got the most lively domestic tourism industry in the sea region. I guess credit goes to gma for that kasi parang nabuhay talaga iyang local tourism sa mga manufacured long weekends dati 😁

I'm not really telling people how to spend their money. I am just wondering why people choose to spend almost all their money on travel.

Now I have 20-30 something colleagues who would live like paupers for several months, like refusing to share for a colleagues birthday cake or gift or refusing to donate P50 to charity. So much sacrifice for a few days of "fun". For example my office BFF is going to Korea, but now all we eat everyday is fast food because we can't go above P100. We used to enjoy eating out now we are always tipid. They invited me to go with them but I refused. hehe.

Some people have the YOLO mindset i suppose. i'm not one of them.

i read article on FHM a few years ago, about how this Lotto winner who squandered his winnings. He said something to the effect that at least he has experienced being a millionaire, even if it was only for a few years...

i don't buy into that logic. If it were me, the fact that i was so lucky would make me want to be sure that money isn't squandered in my lifetime. If you play your cards right, that could change the lives of all the generations(in your family) that will come after you.

But hey, that's just me.

Many people are selfish. But, it's their perogative. Their own happiness matters more to them than someone else's and I can't fault them for thinking that way, especially if they don't have much money to spare. That little bit of happiness is probably what keeps them going in an otherwise, lousy existence.

There was a time when I didn't earn much. I blew my hard-earned cash at strip bars or spent it on my GF at the time. I didn't care much for anyone else. Once I had enough to spare, then I started donating and saving.

Perhaps, getting away from the PH environment is soothing for many. Visiting Japan is a good example. The cities are very crowded. Yet, there is peace and order. Driving around is stress-free. Everyone obeys the rules. You're not thinking half the time if someone is corrupt or crooked.

The situation may be a little different for those with families though. The way things are going right now, and how fast kids grow up, i wouldn't blame anyone if they'd want to have some family bonding time. All within budget, of course.

I didn't go with my ex because I had orders to another base in a different part of the US. I was stationed at Oklahoma at the time. My ex did not want to leave. Me? I hated Oklahoma because it was so hot and humid. Plus, the place was so flat (no mountains). So, we broke up. Simple as that.

My mom had no idea what I was up to here. She still doesn't know my past. I'm not going to say anything.

That's why my number one rule in relationships is my family has to like my BF. And I'll do everything that I can for his family to like me.

If the family does not like you, it tends to become difficult kasi. In our family, it resulted to split ups because the parents or my Lola does not approve of the bf/gf/spouse.
