Debunking Canola Oil Myths
Stories have been circulating on the Internet claiming that canola oil is made from the rapeseed plant, and contains substances that are toxic to humans. The rumor claims that these toxins can lead to ailments ranging from respiratory distress to blindness in humans.
Canola is often confused with rapeseed. The rapeseed plant contains high levels of erucic acid, a substance that in large quantities can be toxic to humans. However, canola is produced from the canola plant, which contains levels of erucic acid well below the FDA's standards.

In the early 1970s, canola was developed using traditional plant breeding techniques to significantly reduce the levels of erucic acid and glucosinolates that were found in the parent rapeseed plant. The name "Canola" is a contraction of "Canadian" and "ola", which means oil.
There is a strict internationally regulated definition of canola that differentiates it from rapeseed, based upon it having less than two percent erucic acid and less than 30 micromoles of glucosinolates. Oilseed products that do not meet this standard cannot use the term canola. High erucic acid rapeseed acreage, although still grown, is now confined to production under contract for specific industrial uses, including environmentally friendly lubricants.
Canola oil has generated a lot of research interest into its potential health benefits because of its low level of saturated fat, high monounsaturated fat and good balance of omega 3 and 6 fats. Click here for a directory of canola oil-related nutrition research.

Hindi naman 100% true yung article...thesis ko yung rapeseed meal/canola meal being fed to manok. I did an in-depth background study dun: genetic modified issue - nuong 80's pa yan ginawa thru natural breeding methods ng halaman at selection of species na hindi matatawag na natural selection. Tinawag na agad nila na "genetically modified" yun.
Ang purpose ng genetic improvement ay para alisin ang anti-nutritional factor nung seed....so Canola is even better than Rapeseed. Maybe oil yield will improve too.
Soyabean have also been genetically modified since the 70's at well as US Corn (dent corn kung tawagin)....lahat yan primary products ng US in their agri trade. Canola is just a trade move ng Canada para hindi rin sila magrely sa US soyabeans (protein source ng livestock ang Canola at Soya).
All oils from these seeds have different fatty acid profile....in the mid/late 80's siniraan din ng American Soybean Association ang coconut oil natin....halos simlar tema nung article na yan.
Bottomline....huwag basta-basta maniwala sa article na tulad niyan. And support our own (coconut oil) .

Through the years, numerous studies have come out how "this" or "that" is bad for you. A lot of these studies contradict each other. What I have found out though is that these studies usually promote whoever provided the funding or grants for the study. In my opinion, at the end of the day if you eat right, exercise daily and live a healthy positive lifstyle, you'll be alright.
