Areas in Pasig, Rizal to experience rotating brownouts
10/08/2009 | 08:47 AM

Some areas in Pasig City and Rizal province may experience rotating brownouts starting Thursday, after a power transformer of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) exploded Wednesday night.

Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) external communications manager Joe Zaldarriaga said Thursday that at least four circuits still have no power due to the shutdown of the NGCP transformer.

"Gagawin natin diyan ang rotating interruptions, para ma-accommodate ang mga naapektuhan at ang mga di pa nababalikan, magro-rotate tayo in terms of customers natin (We will have rotating brownouts in the areas that are still affected)," Zaldarriaga said in an interview on dzBB radio.

But he could not immediately say how long the rotating brownouts would last, saying they are still working out the schedules.

Zaldarriaga said the power trouble started bout 9 p.m. Wednesday after an NGCP transformer at the NGCP delivery point in Dolores in Taytay, Rizal was shut down due to an explosion.

He said the affected transformer supplies power to 11 Meralco substations that service eastern Metro Manila, including Pasig and some areas in Rizal, Quezon City, and Taguig.

The power outage lasted for about an hour.

For now, Zaldarriaga said Meralco shifted its power loads, getting power from other NGCP delivery points in Sucat, Araneta and Zapote to supply power to the affected areas.

Despite this, he said there is still not enough power for Taytay town in Rizal and parts of Angono and Binangonan in Rizal.

He added the Taguig circuit affected the Pinagbuhatan, Raymundo, San Miguel, Tipas, Sagad and Napindan areas in Pasig City.

Earlier reports said the areas initially affected included Marikina, Pasig, San Juan, and parts of Quezon City in Metro Manila, including Meralco Center, and the towns of Binangonan, Taytay, Angono, Cainta and Antipolo in Rizal province. - GMANews.TV

Transformer blast cuts power in parts of NCR and Rizal
10/07/2009 | 11:12 PM

Parts of Metro Manila and Rizal province suffered a power outage late Wednesday evening after an explosion shut down a power transformer of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in Dolores, Taytay, Rizal province.

Manila Electric Company’s (Meralco) Dina Lomotan told radio dzBB that as a result, power to nine Meralco substations have been cut, affecting the cities of Marikina, Pasig, San Juan, and parts of Quezon City in Metro Manila, including Meralco Center, and the towns of Binangonan, Taytay, Angono, Cainta and Antipolo in Rizal province.

Lomotan did not say how long the outage will last, but assured that they are working double-time to restore power the soonest time. (As of 10:00 pm, power has reportedly been restored in some affected service areas.)

A Taytay police officer interviewed over radio dzBB as of posting said that firefighters are still battling a fire caused by the explosion, which occurred about 8:45 p.m.

Faye de Jesus of the NGCP confirmed that their transformer in Dolores encountered a "technical problem," but declined to confirm if it was caused by an explosion.

De Jesus explained that the NGCP is still assessing the cause of the power outage.

Meralco’s Lomotan expressed fears that if the NGCP fails to solve the problem immediately, Metro Manila would have to endure a series of “rotating brownouts."

“I don't how long they will be able to fix that. The worst-case scenario is (that we might have a rotation of) brownouts. Pero sisikapin namin kung saan tayo pwedeng mag-ipon, pagsisikapan namin (But we will try to supply in places where we can)," Lomotan said.

The power outage comes at a time when Marikina, Pasig and adjacent towns have been suffering power blackouts and spotty restoration in the past two weeks due to persistent floods left by storm “Ondoy." – Aie Balagtas See, GMANews.TV

Wow. All those areas were affected by a single transformer catching fire. Wala bang redundancy ang NGCP?

Meralco came out with a press release stating rotating 3 hour brownouts until they fix the generation grid in taytay or something to that effect..... but since thurs, we have had brownouts in the morning from 930 to 1100 am. then again from 200 to 615pm. to top it off, another brown out from 9pm to 2am just now. this looks more like the dark ages again.... ***cking third world service...

Bakit di madaliin ng Meralco ang pag-ayos sa sira? Nakakairita nga yang brown outs na ganyan. Dapat wala na brown-outs sa gabi, para makatulog ng maayos mga tao.
