Sy, Tan, Zobel Lead List of 40 Richest Pinoys

    Inquirer
Last updated 04:10am (Mla time) 12/15/2006

MALL tycoon Henry Sy is one of three billionaires topping a list of the Philippines’ 40 richest persons who have a combined net worth of $16 billion, Forbes Magazine reported in its latest Asian edition. Forbes Asia released its first Philippines’ rich list, but said that as a group, the 40 wealthiest Filipinos are the least affluent when compared with their counterparts in the region.

The magazine attributed that to the Philippines’ chronic political instability and its small stock market, with an estimated capitalization of $50 billion.

The Dec. 25 issue appeared on the newsstands yesterday.

According to Forbes Asia, Sy has a net worth of $4.0 billion, followed by another Chinese-Filipino magnate, Lucio Tan, with a net worth of $2.3 billion.

Sy, 82, owns 27 shopping malls in the Philippines and several others in China. He also owns Banco de Oro Universal Bank and has substantial shares in China Banking Corp. and Equitable PCI Bank. He also owns Highlands Prime Holdings, a high-end property developer.

Tan, 72, owns Philippine Airlines, the country’s flag carrier. His business interests include tobacco (Fortune Tobacco Corp.), beer and liquor (Asia Brewery Inc. and Tanduay Holdings Inc.), and banking (Philippine National Bank and Allied Banking Corp). He also has extensive property holdings in Hong Kong, China and other parts of Asia.

Jaime Zobel de Ayala, 72, came in third on the Forbes list of richest Filipinos with a net worth of $2.0 billion. He is the patriarch of Ayala Corp., the Philippines’ oldest conglomerate, whose business interests include real estate and hotels (Ayala Land Inc.), financial services (Bank of the Philippine Islands), telecommunications (Globe Telecom Inc.), water infrastructure (Manila Water Co. Inc.), electronics and information technology (Integrated Microelectronics Inc. and Azalea Technology Investments Inc.) and automotive (Honda Cars Makati Inc. and Isuzu Automotive Dealership Inc.).

He retired in April and turned over business operations to his two sons.

The magazine also noted the story of John Gokongwei Jr., who ranked sixth on its list of richest Filipinos, with a net worth of $700 million.

After the death of his wealthy father at age 13, Gokongwei peddled thread, soap and candles during World War II. He put up a textile-importing company when he was 19. At the age of 30, he ventured into food manufacture and set up Universal Robina Corp. (URC). His empire expanded into what is now JG Summit Holdings Inc., whose subsidiaries include Cebu Pacific Air, Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc., First Private Power Corp., JG Summit Petrochemical Corp., Litton Mills Inc., Robinsons Land Corp., Robinsons Savings Bank, Sun Cellular, United Industrial Corp. and URC.

Gokongwei, 80, retired in 2001. His brother James now serves as chair and chief executive officer of JG Summit, while his son Lance is president and chief operating officer.

Five women also appear on the list, the richest among them is Beatrice Campos, with a net worth of $160 million. Her late husband, Jose Yao Campos, founded United Laboratories. One of the country’s top pharmaceutical firms, Unilab, also provides health

    OT.

Kanila rin yung mga "Splash" products di ba? Yung mga creams, lotions, and beauty liquids?
