Oil prices to rise by as much as P2.60 per liter

Oil companies are poised to increase fuel prices by as much as P2.60 per liter next week in light of rising costs of imported fuel, ABS-CBN News learned Friday.

But Independent Petroleum Players Association of the Philippines Chairman Fernando Martinez said it is most likely that oil companies will increase prices by P1 per liter first and then just wait before passing on the balance.

Martinez said the increase is mainly because of the higher cost of imported fuel in May which has risen by about $50 a barrel for gasoline and $45 a barrel for diesel.

In addition, Martinez said, the oil firms still have an underecovery of costs incurred in January this year, which was not passed on.

Martinez said that the volatile exchange rate is also not helping stabilize oil prices.

Oil firms admitted that the drastic increase in fuel prices could translate to a 1.5% increase in the consumer price index and a 2.5% to 5% increase in transport costs.

The Department of Energy (DOE) for its part said an increase in oil prices is inevitable because it is a decision being made by OPEC (Oil Producing and Exporting Countries).

DOE Usec. Emmanuel de Dios, however, assured that the government will try to cushion the impact of higher fuel costs by trying to extend the discount that some oil firms have been giving public utility vehicles. He added that DOE will also increase public information drive on fuel conservation and price monitoring.

According to him, the government will accelerate the use of alternative sources of fuel, like coco-diesel and compressed natural gas to keep transport costs low
