PETA has created a misleading campaign for Maali by presenting her as a deprived pachyderm who deserves to be returned to an elephant orphanage or the wilds. It is the intent of PETA to use this false cause to raise money or donations for it's own benefit, contrary to the love and care that Maali's friends have shown.

PETA Killed a Near Record-Breaking 95 Percent of Adoptable Dogs and Cats in its Care During 2011

Hypocritical Animal Rights Group Brings Pet Death Toll To 27,751

Washington, DC — Today the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published documents online, obtained by a Freedom of Information Act request, showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed a staggering 95.9 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2011. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the notorious animal rights group has continued killing adoptable animals at its Norfolk, VA headquarters, at an average of 37 pets every week.

According to records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 1,911 cats and dogs last year while placing just 24 in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 27,751 pets have died at the hands of PETA workers.

MAALI is happy & healthy where she is.

How can you release an elephant into the wild who has learned to depend on her handlers for her care?

It's like releasing a captive bred tiger into Africa and expecting it to know how to hunt and survive.

The same can be said about how does PETA know what Maali really wants? Or more to the point, is PETA using the issue of Maali to mislead more people in their animal liberation causes? (including no-pets, no animal for food, no animal testing for medicines, etc).

I've seem Mali at the Manila Zoo. It did not appear that she was at all happy where she was. She would get irritated when tourists would throw stuff into her den, which happened all the time. Flashbulbs didn't seem to be a favorite either.

She needs to be with her own kind and not caged alone for tourists to ogle at. Putting her in a sanctuary is the right thing to do.

the stupidest thing to do is right away release a zoo animal back in the wild.
if they won't go where people are for food, where they would be an easy target for poachers, most probably they would be killed by their own.
i've seen a stupid person release his pet monkey and birds back in the wild where their conspecifics are. the monkey was beaten to death by the wild monkeys and i believe was even cannibalized. the birds won't just go away and went with people.
i have friends who "rehab-ed" varanids for very long, before they were totally released, and according to them some succumbed lacking instinct for survival. theory is, they lost it for being pets.
malli was enclosed for so long, IMO it needs serious behavior modification. it will cost time and money.

    Joke from Jay Leno:

"I'm sure you've seen in the news, animal rights activists throw red paint on people who wear fur. But do you know why they don't throw red paint on people who wear leather? Because the Hell's Angels hit back."
