December 17th, 2004 02:31 PM #341. Remember the scene where the orcs were posiitoned outside Helm's Deep? Why did Aragorn tell the archers to hold their fire? Wouldn't it make sense to let the archers fire at will as soon as they got in range? Why wait for them to get organized, come into formation, and get dangerously close?
***First they are a bit far from from the enemy they have to come nearer for great impact. Second, Legolas told them that the orcs/uruk-hais are weak in the neck. It will be useless to shoot them without hitting them in their weakness remember they have very thick armor and are much stronger, the one that carried the torch was even hit twice but still managed to run and blew himself up including the wall. if you notice even the elven archers are taking their aiming their arrows (obviously they are faster than men) unlike Legolas.
2. Ehen the orcs managed to blow up a section of the wall, the archers were doing a good job holding them back. Why on earth did Aragorn tell them to charge the orcs? They could have held them at a distance with arrows, but instead they got their skinny asses kicked by twice-as-big orcs...
*** They have to charge after they threw their first arrows because they have to stop the orcs/uruk-hais from going inside, if they kept shooting arrows, the enemies could use some shield and they can attack in every direction since they are greatly outnumbered and they retreated eventually. The battle of middle earth in the first part of the trilogy Fellowship of the Ring is a different scenario it's an all out war so they waited the orcs to come closer and use their elven swords, and the elves even have killing techniqes and on how to use their swords (check their website or dvd extended version).
3. Why did Gandalf run off to fetch Eomyr, when he could have easily turned the tide at Helm's Deep if he just stayed put and blasted the orcs with magic? He's a white wizard di ba?
***He can't fight alone. If that's the case then all he has to do is fight Balrog then turn into white wizard kill all the enemies, but no, after he killed Balrog he was sent again to fulfill his purpose and help men and fight with them. he still uses sword and staff killing orcs/uruk-hais.
4. why was the only weak section of Helm's Deep -- the drain where the orcs placed the mines/bombs -- left unguarded? Even if the orcs didn't have any bombs, they could have rammed the fence a few times and get through(although it'd be tough squeezing orcs through that opening)
***Theoden did not know much of Helm's Deep have drainage because Rohan is his territory. He is confident because of the great wall until it was blown up and he panicked.
5. Why didn't Elrond send additional troops after sending the first one?
***Actually Elrond sent the troops as i quote Haldir "I bring word from Elrond...we are happy to be alongside men once more. long ago we fought and died together." Elrond was afraid that they might lose, hesitant to take chances and he was protecting his people too. In FOTR he wanted Frodo to leave asap because he was afraid that the ring wraiths might destroy their village that's why he formed the Fellowship of the Ring.

Helm's Deep is part of the Rohan country.
>> Helm’s Deep: A refuge of the Rohirrim. Originally Gondorian, but held by Rohan from that country's foundation in III 2510.

I don't think that Elrond was afraid of the ring wraiths (as he has a Ring of Air and is the one protecting Rivendell), but of the massive invasion of Sauron against them. Elves aren't as powerful in the Third Age since many of them are migrating back to the West / Undying Lands.

Actually, being titled a "white" wizard has nothing to do with Gandalf's power. The term "white wizards" only refers to the head of Wizards. Since Saruman allied with Sauron, Gandalf took the title from Saruman.
