MANILA, Philippines—If it's not a crime, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago would have challenged Ilocos Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson to a duel if only to prove she was not afraid of him.
“He scares a lot of people because of his alleged tendency to violence. But I challenge him personally,” Santiago said in a statement on Wednesday, reacting to the case filed against her by Singson, whom he had tagged as jueteng operator in the country.
“I wish I could challenge him to a duel but that's a crime under the Penal Code. So instead, I challenge him to a debate on any of the major TV channels,” she said.
The senator even twitted Singson by giving him a new name, “Singson the Sabit” for filing the case, which was similar to a case earlier filed against her at the Office of the Ombudsman last July.
The first case had been dismissed by the Ombudsman for lack of jurisdiction over members of Congress.
“Singson is sabit na naman, meaning he has again broken the law. The Ombudsman herself ruled that he has no jurisdiction over a senator,” said Santiago.
Unfazed, Santiago was even planning to deliver another privilege speech to be called “Singson the Sabit.”
“He has a list of sabit, meaning criminal liabilities, Maybe I'll expose it on the Senate floor after I recover from my present illness,” said the senator, who has been on sick leave because of hypothyroidism.
Santiago did not also spare the only newspaper, apparently referring to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, that carried out the story of Singson's case.
“He (Singson) is so influential that he can convince staff of a paper to resurrect a dead story. I am filing a complaint with the paper's Ombudsman,” she said.
To further prove her resilience in exposing the jueteng operators in the country, the senator has requested Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares and the police to order lifestyle checks on all alleged operators led by Singson.
