    'Jurassic Park' dino had feathers--study

WASHINGTON -- The velociraptor, the fierce scaly-skinned dinosaur made popular by the film "Jurassic Park," actually had feathers, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science.
Scientists have long been aware that many dinosaurs had feathers, but scientists who made a fresh examination of a collection of velociraptor bones found indications of quill knobs where feathers may have been anchored.
Paleontologists from the American Museum of Natural History and the Field Museum of Natural History made the discovery while examining fossils of a forearm bone that was dug up in Mongolia in 1998.
"The lack of quill knobs does not necessarily mean that a dinosaur did not have feathers," said lead author of the study Alan Turner.
"Finding quill knobs on the velociraptor, though, means that it definitely had feathers. This is something we'd long suspected, but no one had been able to prove."
The feathers would have been anchored to the quill knobs via ligaments, but the study's authors believe the dinosaur was not able to fly.
The velociraptor that was studied stood three feet (one meter) tall and was about five feet (1.5 meters) long and weighed 30 pounds (14 kilograms), but its "relatively short forelimbs compared to a modern bird ... indicated it lacked volant, or flight, abilities."
"Perhaps an ancestor of the velociraptor lost the ability to fly, but retained its feathers," which "may have been useful for display, to shield nests, for temperature control, or to help it maneuver while running."
The bones studied were found in the Gobi desert and are believed to be from the Cretaceous Period, dating to around 80 million years ago.
Paleontologists believe that the first birds appeared 150 million years ago and that they were descendants of small feathered dinosaurs.

Kaya pala minsan pagtingin ko sa mga manok, may pagkahawig sa mga dinosaur e

not a surprise....diba sabi nila sa Jurassic Park movie mismo that the birds of prey are their descendants.

i went to a Birds of Prey show at the Miami Zoo and they showed a huge flightless predator bird called the cassowary...yung galaw niya at bilis parang velociraptor talaga...ang sama pa makatingin :nerves:

from what i can recall, there were also findings that dinosaurs had some sort diaphragm daw or whatever scientific term it was term. basta with that characteristic, they can easily speak languages like English, Spanish etc.

what if just what if we are all wrong and the cartoon network is right. domesticated dinosaurs that you can chat with . maybe that explains the mysteries of the ancient bldgs. with their sheer size and strength, kaya nila magtayo nun.

    now that's interesting ...

Cassowaries are freaky birds hehe parang pinalaking turkey

The 2004 edition of the Guinness World Records lists the cassowary as the world's most dangerous bird. Normally cassowaries are very shy but when disturbed can lash out dangerously with their powerful legs. During World War II American and Australian troops stationed in New Guinea were warned to steer clear of the birds. They are capable of inflicting fatal injuries to an adult human. Usually, attacks are the result of provocation. Wounded or cornered birds are particularly dangerous. Cassowaries, deftly using their surroundings to conceal their movements, have been known to out-flank organized groups of human predators. Cassowaries are considered to be one of the most dangerous animals to keep in zoos, based on the frequency and severity of injuries incurred by zookeepers. - Wikipedia

Baka naman yung mga earlier species ng dinosaurs lang ang merong feathers. As they evolved nawala na rin yung feathers kaya yung mga latter species like the Tyrannosaurus Rex e wala ng feathers.

Ang baduy kasi ng T-Rex na merong feathers e, parang wala ng angas. Parang giant monster chicken, a he he he...

I believe it's the other way around. The Dinos are birds' ancestors. So yung mga newer dinos ang maaaring may feathers. Sabi ko na nga ba eh -- I'm not afraid of birds for nothing!!!

pinatalon nila yung cassowary sa show...it jumped so high that its feet (tipped with razor sharp talons i might add) reached the height of its trainer's head!! :shocked2: i guess if it wanted to it could have inflicted a Mortal Kombat-style decapitation fatality. the bird is also super-fast and super-strong.

    modern day velociraptor talaga :nerves:

the Jurassic Park special effects guys knew that the raptors were basically prehistoric flightless, featherless birds, and they made them look and move like them. shet, even the name "raptor" means "bird of prey"
