Luisita workers vow to defend picket lines

Striking workers at the Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac said they were preparing for a confrontation with police as authorities are set to implement a return to work order Thursday.


ABS-CBN correspondent Doris Bigornia reported that the strikers vowed to defend 23 picketlines around Hacienda Luisita.


The protesters have been massing up since Wednesday night, collecting stones for slingshots to ward off law enforcers.


The Philippine National Police said members of the PNP Special Action Force from Camp Crame and about 1,000 policemen from Camp Makabulos will help implement the return-to-work order.


The series of protest actions at Hacienda Luisita calls for a wage increase, the rehiring of 300 workers who were illegally dismissed from their jobs and the conversion of the Hacienda into an industrial park.


The Luisita management had declared the strike as illegal.


Two strikers were shot by unidentified men last January 6, just over a month after a violent dispersal of protesters at the Cojuangcos' 6,000-hectare property killed seven and left hundreds injured.
