we(la sallian community) think of you often
    and make no outward show,
But what it means to lose you,
    no one will ever know
    You wished no one farewell,
    not even said good-bye,
You were gone before we knew it,
    and only God knows why.
    You are not forgotten
    nor will you ever be,
As long as life and memories last,
    we will remember thee.
To some you may be forgotten,
to others a part of the past,
But to us who loved you dearly,
    your memories will always last.
    Nothing can be more beautiful
than the memories we have of you.
To us, you were someone special,
God must have thought so too!
If tears could build a staircase
    and memories a lane,
we would walk all the way to Heaven,
and bring you back again. - ANON

La Salle’s Brother Rafe, ‘teacher to the end’

TEACHER to the end. This is what his students, peers and fellow De La Salle brothers called him.

Br. Rafael S. Donato FSC (Serafin Ramon Donato) died unexpectedly on Nov. 2 in Morong, Bataan, at the age of 69.

Brother Rafe, a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools or De La Salle Brothers, was a known and highly esteemed educator and religious brother. At the time of his death he was president of De La Salle University-Araneta and the brothers’ community director at La Salle Green Hills (LSGH).

A report from the brothers said that on Thursday at around 2:30 p.m., Brother Rafe went for a swim in the sea and went missing for six hours. His body was recovered at 8:30 p.m., a kilometer from where he was last seen.

Another source in the La Salle community said he had apparently intended to just walk along the beach when he may have gone wading and the strong undertow pulled him from the shore.

Born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, on Oct. 12, 1937, Brother Rafe celebrated his golden jubilee as a La Salle brother last month on Oct. 16.

He served the Lasallian family for 50 years and was described as “an exemplary brother, outstanding teacher and visionary leader of schools and the Philippine District (of his congregation).”

He studied at De La Salle College in Manila and pursued graduate studies in Columbia University and Harvard University. He held various positions in De la Salle institutions and his religious congregation. He was president of LSGH from 1970 to 1973, De La Salle University from 1991 to 1994 and president and dean of the graduate school of La Salle Lipa.

He started as a grade school and high school teacher in the 1960s. That was after he joined the De La Salle brothers in 1956. He made his first vows in 1957 and his final vows in 1962.

Brother Rafe was described as an institution builder who focused on the development and stability of programs. He put in place sound financial practices and built infrastructure and corporations to ensure the La Salle schools continuity and sustainability.

Despite such big assignments, he stressed the importance of culture, whether through music, drama or literary activities.
He also devoted time to the brotherhood as formator, visitor and community director. The congregation was founded in France in the late 17th century by St. John Baptist de la Salle, the patron saint of teachers.

Brother Rafe consistently created opportunities for the young to be able to get a Lasallian education by providing scholarships to the underprivileged at La Salle-supervised schools. Outside the Lasallian family, Brother Rafe shared his expertise with associations and religious congregations.

In his will, Brother Rafe expressed the wish that donations in his honor be made to the Foundation for Sharing Lasallian Education.

To the brothers who knew him well, he was a trailblazer and pillar, faithfully serving out his vows and consecration worded, thus: “Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, with profound respect before your infinite majesty, I consecrate myself entirely to you to procure your glory as far as I am able and as you will require of me.”

Brother Rafe’s remains lie at the National Shrine of the Divine Child, La Salle Green Hills, Mandaluyong. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Wednesday after which his remains will be brought to Lipa City for interment at the De La Salle Brothers’ Memorial Cloister.

He was the president of La Salle Bacolod when I was in prep in the late 70's. Was surprised to read the news.
