BACK-UP cars of government officials may be banned from the roads as part of the energy conservation measures to be imposed by Malacañang.

Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo yesterday said Malacañang is open to the proposal of Energy Undersecretary Peter Anthony Abaya to limit if not totally ban back-up cars of government executives to save on fuel amid the unabated increase in the prices of oil in the world market. Some government officials have a convoy of up to three back-up cars when they go out.

"We are studying all possible energy cost-cutting measures. Kung ito ay pwedeng isagawa nang hindi na makakabawas sa seguridad at pangangailangan ng miyembro ng gabinete ay pihadong isasagawa yan," he said.

President Macapagal-Arroyo earlier said she is set to issue executive orders that would institutionalize energy conservation. The President also reiterated her directive to dispose of all luxury vehicles in light of the economic situation.
