I bet those who designed this don't use coins on a regular basis. Yes there are subtle differences, but people aren't always on an ideal environment to differentiate it. For example if you are in the dark or can't use your eyes to prepare coins, like when you are about to pay toll fee.

One thing I do is have a separate pocket for these new coins, and try to use them as soon as possible.
