Air filters will make a car more responsive. What they won't do, typically, is make it more fuel efficient.

But there are exceptions. One effect of having a different fuel filter or a cone filter on the car is to change the readings of the Mass Airflow Sensor. If the readings change significantly, the filter will produce more power than you would normally expect, and will cause the engine to run leaner, resulting in better fuel economy.

Some cars will adapt, changing the fuel mixture to return it to normal. Some won't. But any change in economy or power is NOT JUIST because the filter flows more air, but because it changes sensor readings, which alters the way the engine operates.

But on cars that use MAP sensors instead of MAF sensors, which rely on pressure instead of air flow, air filters often result in no fuel economy or power gains.

Thanks for the added inputs sir niky. So the author has a point in stating such.

    It is all good sir.

One more thing, how about using synthetic oils as compared with mineral oils in improving gas mileage. Is this also a myth?

Depends on the grade. What synthetic does is allow you to make thinner oils with longer life. Thinner oil makes for better fuel economy, as long as the engine can take it.

If your gaskets are worn, it will be more likely to leak.
