Mercedes-Benz halts production across Europe

With COVID-19 still affecting Europe, Daimler AG temporarily suspends European production

More and more factories around the world are beginning to shut down production due to the threat of COVID-19. Closely following the suspension of production by Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Peugeot, Daimler Group, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, has officially announced that they will be temporarily halting production for two weeks.

The company stated that they have decided to suspend the majority of production in Europe, as well as in select administrative departments. This was done in adherence to the recommendation by national, international, and local authorities with regards to the safety of the workforce amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The suspension of work applies to Daimler's car, van, and commercial vehicle plants across Europe.

The company also said that due to the spread of COVID-19, its global supply chain has been affected as well. This has resulted in factory production not having the necessary raw materials and parts needed in order to build vehicles. Moreover, the company has lower its expected demand in order to protect its financial strength during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With these closures, Daimler is helping to protect its workforce, to interrupt chains of infection and to contain the spread of the pandemic. At the same time, this will help the company to prepare for a period of temporarily lower demand and to protect its financial strength,” said Daimler in a statement.

When will the company resume production? Daimler or Mercedes-Benz have yet to give a clear answer as they are still monitoring the situation and studying further measures. However, they did mention that full operation will restart once the situation improves.

With Mercedes-Benz Philippines sourcing most of its vehicles from Europe, expect your delivery to be delayed. But given the current situation in the country, getting your brand-new Mercedes-Benz should be the least of your worries for now.

PSA (Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel/Vauxhall) also closes their plants temporarily. Resumes on March 27.

The PSA Group European factories will be closed until March 27. Aside from the coronavirus pandemic, the French automaker says closure of the plants is also due to “supply disruptions from major suppliers” and the “sudden decline in the automobile market”. They will be “going beyond the recommendations of the health authorities on the sites” in order to protect against the spread of the virus.
