Missing companion now a suspect in Pilar Pilapil case

MANILA, Philippines - Police on Monday said they are now considering the missing companion of actress Pilar Pilapil as a suspect in the actress's near fatal stabbing last April 14.

Director Samuel Pagdilao of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group said Rosel Jacosalem Peñas, who accompanied Pilapil on the day of the stabbing, and 2 other suspects are now the subject of a manhunt by police.

Peñas has been missing since the day of the stabbing. Before the attack, Pilapil reportedly met Peñas at a mall to discuss a donation for the actress' foundation.

Pagdilao said Peñas was spotted a day after the attack driving the same vehicle where Pilapil was stabbed. The vehicle, a beige Kia Carens (CIZ-888), was owned by a certain Romeo dela Cuesta.

He said 4 days after Peñas's disappearance, Peñas's husband received a text message demanding P10 million for her release.

Pagdilao said all of the information relayed by Peñas to Pilapil turned out to be false. Unilever Philippines has denied that Peñas is an employee of the company and that Peñas's vehicle was owned by Unilever.

Police are now eyeing robbery and "kidnap me" angles in the Pilapil case.
