Personally I think that it was intentional to have the ending that way. That the grand plans to take the Night King head on would be futile - we all saw how Drogon's fire, assumed to be the greatest artillery in all of Westeros, which had wiped out entire armies in previous episodes, prove to be useless against the Night King.

We also saw how the showrunners spent 8 precious minutes of the episode establishing Arya's otherworldy ability to sneak up and go past a room full of wights undetected. This was in stark (pun intended) contrast to Jon trying to sneak up to the Night King, only to be discovered from afar and ending up having to deal with newly resurrected wights.

There was also foreshadowing in S08E01 where Arya snuck up to Jon by the weirwood tree, at the exact same spot where she snuck up on the Night King.

Even the weapon used for the kill, Bran's (now Arya's) dagger, was significant as it had been around since season 1 and its use in the attempted murder of Bran was what caused all the subsequent political and eventually mystical events to unfold.

It was all about getting the Night King off guard. Even the sneak attack almost didn't work - Arya got caught with a mid-air choke. But it was when Arya let go of the dagger with her left hand that the Night King let his guard down as he stared at the falling weapon (assuming it was because of asphyxiation), only to be caught by Arya's right hand, then straight through his icy core. We've seen Arya do this before (sparring with Brienne), so it was all a commencement of what Arya has trained several seasons for.

I was hoping that while the Targaryen-Northmen-BWOB would have been victorious during the battle, it would only be a temporary setback for the Night King and would have made an interesting plot point when the Targaryen and Lannister armies squared off and the Night King appears, ala-Battle of the Five Armies (after all GoT seems to be getting ideas from the LoTR stories anyway).

Great episode. A bit too dark, could hardly see what's going on. (tipid sa special effects/CGI?) Arya delivering the death blow was a pleasant surprise.

I just wonder how they'll come up with something that won't be anticlimactic, since the army of the dead is surely the bigger challenge compared to Cersei's army.

Yup, that's what they were going for.

I was expecting something to happen kasi may build up but I didn't expect it was her. I really forgot about her, I was expecting something from Bran. They also made her appear powerless against the NK being held up like that but they gave her a swift kill because they were after that gulat reaction from the audience.

I didn't read the book but one vlog dedicated to GoT didn't like this ending because in the books and all 7 seasons, the clues were all pointing to Jon tapos they went on a different direction just coz of this reason.

Mini has mentioned this but yes, they don't need to show all that because in previous seasons, they were able to establish that Arya has been trained for this. I remember bore na bore ako sa mga scenes sa Braavos but after seeing all that she went through, when she killed the waif and left, you're convinced she's not the same. Sansa and Brienne were surprised at her during the sparring scene, but not the audience.

so I guess George RR Martin read Machiavelli's Art of War.

He placed the horsemen Dolrahti at the front, or the Cavalry in the Art of War.
He placed the Major Characters on the sides (Jaime, Brienne and the Lord of Winterfell, or the Knights / Dukes in the Art of War
He placed the other army of Dany, (yun mga walang penis) sa back, or the Pikemen in the Art of War
He placed the catapults in front of the pikemen, yun ang mali sa art of war.

and then the trench around the castle for the last line of defense.

pero ang galing noh, when the Dolrahti retreated they ran at the back to reinforce the next in line, then the next and the next

It's like watching Machiavelli's book instead of reading it.
Parang hindi naman. If they followed Machiavelli's recommended battle formation then the pikemen would have been in front and the cavalry on the flank. The only thing that's somehow similar is the placement of the artillery in front tapos halos one time use lang hehehe. Machiavelli has been criticized for his underestimation of the artillery.
