(UPDATED - 4:26 p.m.) MANILA, Philippines - A day after it was reported that he had stepped down as Cedric Lee's spokesperson, lawyer Raymond Fortun admitted that he was hurt by online criticisms which claim, among others, that financial gain was his main motivation for representing the businessman.
In an interview with ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda on Monday, Fortun said what he found most painful was netizens' personal attacks, and the imputation that he was only after money.
“Ang masakit dito, pagkatao ko ang binabanatan. That is the one that hurts the most. Sasabihin ganyan na pera, pera lang daw ako," said Fortun.
Fortun, younger brother of Ampatuan lawyer Sigfrid Fortun, said: "Hindi nila alam na ako ay nanggaling sa isang pamilya na parehong abogado. Ang tatay ko ay isang retired RTC judge na ni minsan ay hindi nagpabayad bilang judge." (They don't know that I came from a family wherein both my parents are lawyers. My father is a retired regional trial court judge who did not accept bribes to fix a case even once.)
His family remains "poor" he added. "Kami po ay mahirap pa din dahil 'yong tatay ko ilang beses inalukan iyan na magpanalo ng kaso, ni minsan hindi siya tumanggap. 'Yong nanay ko po, hanggang 2 a.m. nagsasakripisyo para sa aming magkakapatid para maglagay ng pagkain sa aming mesa." (We remain poor because my father was offered bribes many times to fix cases, but he turned them all down. My mother worked until 2 a.m. striving so that she could lay food on the table for us.)
