It's a GDI or gasoline direct injection engine. It's supposed to burn leaner fuel mixes and still be cleaner in terms of emissions yet still have the same or better power for the same displacement of conventional engines.

In layman's terms, what's so special about the engine?

    And no more spark plugs?

In a "normal" engine, gasoline is mixed in with the air before the air/fuel mix enters the engine cylinder. The entire mix is compressed by the piston and ignited with a sparkplug.

In a GDI engine, only air enters the cylinder and compressed by the piston. Then gasoline is injected into the compressed air and the spark plug ignites the mixture.

I see, thanks for the info.

Hope they'll give better torque and HP figures at par with competition, at least on their future brochures.

I'm getting an impression it will be more responsive to air intake modification but not quite as well to forced induction.
