As for the Subaru Forester, the normally aspirated engine feels under powered. An all new model will be out by 2019 but can't wait that long.

Some say the RAV4’s engine is an unwilling performer. It is not that responsive. I think it is the same engine as the Camry which is also known to offer a boring ride.

It handles quite well for a CUV - definitely better than any PPV, but not quite as agile as a CX5 or Forester. The tradeoff for agility is that it's more comfortable and refined over poor roads than the other two CUVs and is exponentially more comfortable than any PPV.

Any concern with the CVT? I know current Honda and Toyota CVTs have a better reputation than Nissan and Subaru CVTs but I still have doubts about the long term durability of this tech.

The RAV/Camry's 2AR-FE.. Boring, but not unwilling hehe. Definitely not low on power

My Civic has 31,000 km with not a single CVT issue. I wouldn't worry about it.

My personal ride is a Camry 2.5V. I find the power more than adequate. It accelerates with authority and can haul 4 passengers up Tagaytay Midlands on D without a sweat. The 6AT is smooth and the ride is extremely comfortable. Plus it is as reliable as a ref.

I am actually smitten by the VW Golf GTS but my wife insists on a CUV because she likes something compact w high ground clearance. Sorry, off topic na.

I drive a Forester XT and I have no issues with its CVT tranny. The Forester SJ platform is almost 6 years old and there are no known issues with its CVT tranny.

The tranny is a bit soft off the line but it is quite smooth. Too smooth that it dampens the sensation of going fast - you feel you are just cruising but you are already doing more than 150 kmh.

If you want something sure to be as reliable as your ref...

CRV and the RAV4 are good places to start.

The CX5 is probably as good pero doesn't have the pedigree... yet.

Toyota could have tuned the engine to be livelier the same way Honda has done with the Accord’s K24 or Mazda with its SkyActiv 2.5L.
